The sweet smell of success Since the dawn of civilisation, men and women have been enhancing their physical attributes with fragrances. Today, beautifully conceived scents are used not to hide odours but to make us more appealing; and to win in the scent market is to win big, which is why X Factor’s Tulisa and a multitude of other celebrities are more than happy to attach their names to the scent of money. There is real class to be found in women’s fragrances that cannot be matched by even the finest box of chocolates or bouquet of flowers. Another point, when men are considering women’s perfumes, is their longevity; long after the chocolates are eaten and the roses have withered, female perfumes are as good as new and every little dab reminds the wearer of the person who took the trouble to buy such a special gift. The big problem with men who buy their partners female fragrances is often their lack of imagination. The simple truth is that men do not trust their noses and are inclined to simply buy what they know their partners like as opposed to reaching out and trying something new. There is no doubt that if a new perfume does capture the imagination it can make quite a splash but amongst the successes of the big brand names even celebrity female perfumes can struggle to find a market; it is true that TFB by Tulisa appeals to young girls keen on the X Factor, especially as Tulisa mentored the winning group, ‘Little Mix’, but the chances of TFB by Tulisa becoming a brand as big as Chanel are as slight as winning X Factor ...second thoughts, TFB may well become one of the world’s top women’s fragrances but it’s not really a realistic possibility. rnMore money than scents Many small retailers will be aware of the fact that when it comes to scents money is no object as long as the packaging and the bottle looks classy. In fact, there is a rule of fragrance thumb that the bigger the bottle the cheaper a perfume looks, unless it is within a wonderful, cut glass bottle. Of course, Givenchy and Chanel could be sold in much cheaper containers but it is the beauty of their bottles and the minimal contents contained therein that make those brands so appealing. Perhaps, this year, stockists of perfumes should reach out to the back of the wholesaler’s shelf and stock a few of the less well-known brands – surely there are a few men who are prepared to by a brand that is not Chanel No 5? Mothering Sunday has come and gone but there are many more occasions when to buy a scent is to buy lasting pleasure.
