Nurturing your baby is a beautiful experience even though it can be quite aggravating when none of your clothes fit. And the ones that do just don’t look as good. But this should not worry you! You’re growing a baby, you’re not getting fat! It’s completely natural to gain those kilos and you should celebrate it! To feel better about yourself and to enjoy your pregnancy glow it is worth buying some essential maternity wear. You deserve to be comfortable. Your pregnant belly doesn’t need to be hidden; it should be complimented by the right cuts and fabrics. Above all you should be comfortable at all times. I collected a list of maternity wear claimed to be essential from veterans. This is simply a guide because at the end of the day whatever makes you feel beautiful (and comfortable) will make your glow resplendent.

  1. Maternity Compression Hosiery
    1. Maternity hosiery is vital for those with pregnancy induced varicose veins which can be really painful. While this hosiery may not be comfortable it will ease the pain considerable, even if you only wear stockings/pantyhose a few times a week. A good test for compression hosiery size is to see if they can pulled on easily; make sure they cannot. They need to be tight to ease the pressure on your legs.
  2. Lingerie
    1. As your baby grows certain parts of your body will grow as a direct response. Your breasts may grow into a bigger size. At this point you shouldn’t restrict yourself in your non-pregnant size but should invest in a handful of pregnancy bras. These should be very comfortable and should provide the best support.
  3. Maternity Shapewear
    1. Unlike regular shapewear, maternity shapewear is designed especially for the baby bump. It is extra stretchy and has under the bump air hole inserts for comfort. The purpose of maternity shapewear is also different from typical shapewear because it’s not trying to squeeze you into a smaller dress size but it just providing some support and smoothening out the curves so your clothes fit better.
  4. Jeans/ trousers/leggings
    1. If you’re keeping the maternity shopping to a bare minimum, maternity-jeans (stretchy jeans with a maternity waistband) is the wisest investment. You’ll be wearing them constantly. You’ll be getting bigger for 9 months and keeping the weight for a few months after the birth so it is definitely worth it to invest in a pregnancy wardrobe of trousers. You don’t just want regular fitting trousers with elastic added on to the waist. Buy yourself trousers designed specially for the pregnant physique.
    2. Maternity leggings can also be quite appealing, especially in the third trimester. Invest in a well tailored pair that will be flattering even toward the end of your pregnancy.
  5. Dresses
    1. The best dress for all 3 trimesters is a jersey wrap dress. It’ ideal for the newly pregnant who are still trying to hide it. And the right find will continue ot fit as your body grows is unfamiliar ways. The belt can just loosen as you grow while highlighting your waist and making your belly look less obvious than it is. Dark colors are more helpful than light.
    2. Long flow maxi dresses are also very complimentary.
    3. Dresses with in-built cups are also incredibly helpful since wearing a strapless bra when pregnant can be problematic. Besides worrying about support you also have to worry about keeping it down. The strapless bra is not really designed to sit atop the baby bump comfortable; it keeps being pushed up…
  6. Shirts
    1. As your bump grows bigger, along with your breasts, it will grow increasingly important to buy the right kind of shirts. In the beginning wearing loose, flowy shirts can hide the bump. As it becomes unavoidable to hide make sure your bump is not exposed. Buy long comfortable maternity shirts.
    2. Try to avoid button down shirts since it can be hard to avoid gaping between buttons with the pregnant body.
