Exposure. It's what everyone wants, especially online. Whether yours is a web based or brick and mortar business, it's a certainty that you have a website and there is one thing which spells success for any website: traffic. Building traffic is your goal; without visitors, you aren't going to drive sales, raise the profile of your business or successfully establish a reputation on the web.
Since your prospective customers are more than likely to be found online in our ever more connected age, this is a venue where you need to make a serious effort to reach them. Even if your business is one which doesn't lend itself to the e-commerce model, you do need to publicize yourself on the World Wide Web. You may already have search engine optimized your website, used some contextual advertising, even distributed articles and used social media platforms to build links to your site; but you're missing one of the most effective ways to gain exposure for your business: an information product.
What is an information product? It's understandable that you may be unfamiliar with this term, but it's actually a very simple concept. This is exactly what it sounds like; a piece of informative content, usually in the form of an e-book or text document, but it could also be a white paper, report, even an audio or video file. These products are generally delivered by email, often via an autoresponder (which can have the added benefit of getting contact information if you happen to be building a mailing list). In fact, an information product is often used by internet marketers as an incentive in return for signing up for such as list.
Of course, list building may not be on your own list of goals for your business. Even so, an information product can bring you a lot of exposure online and it is easier than you think to create one and even make it into a profitable venture in its own right. As a business owner, it stands to reason that you're an expert in your own field, whatever that happens to be. You no doubt have some information which people, especially those in your target market would be eager to have; so use this opportunity to share your expertise with the world!
There are two very important things which an information product does: it helps you to establish a reputation as an expert (and who wouldn't prefer to do business with an expert?) as well as being another way to build links to your site and raise your online profile. Since you'll create this product yourself or at the least have it written for you, you can place a link for readers to visit your site in the information product itself. This is more of a direct method of driving traffic to your site, rather than a page rank-boosting back link, but every little bit does help.
Make sure to publicize your info product, making a page for it on your website and linking to this page from social media platforms, any social networking profile pages and so on. If you use Twitter (which you should be if you're not), make sure to announce your information product via this channel as well; Twitter posts are exceptionally search engine friendly.
Whether you're giving your information product away as a promotional strategy, using it as a list building tool or even selling it for a profit (and it is an excellent profit margin if you create something which has an audience willing to pay for it), this is a means of maximizing your exposure that you neglect at your own peril. Even if you don't do this, it's very likely that your competitors will.
