Medical tourism is providing international patients with an alternative to receiving medical treatments in their home country. It is the concept of patients traveling from their home country to another country to receive medical care. The main reason patients are choosing to travel abroad is affordability and high quality care. Medical tourism is becoming more popular as healthcare costs rise in the United States. Patients can receive the same medical procedure they would receive in their home country for 50-80% of the cost. Patients can finally receive access to the medical treatments that they could not afford in their home country. Most Americans believe the U.S. offers the best medical care in the world. However there are millions of Americans who are uninsured or under insured and cannot afford health insurance that help cover expensive medical treatments. Individuals who cannot afford health insurance but still need medical treatments must seek alternatives for their medical care. Medical tourism is the alternative that uninsured and under insured individuals are looking for. Patients can finally receive high quality medical care at an affordable cost without the wait time. Some Americans are still hesitant to travel to another country when it comes to receiving high risk surgeries such as a heart value replacement or brain tumor surgery. Because the health care system in the U.S. is held in such high esteem many Americans find it difficult to believe another country will have as high quality care especially at a lower cost. When in fact, many of the doctors overseas received their training and education in the U.S and then moved back to their home country. Although Americans are less likely to receive major medical treatments abroad they are likely to consider plastic surgery which is an elective surgery that often times is not covered by their health insurance. medical tourism, is a more affordable alternative option for the patient. Patients that travel abroad can pay less for their procedure and their travel expenses compared to covering the whole procedure in the U.S. Another common treatment Americans will travel overseas for are alternative medical treatments. Some patients are seeking treatments that are not yet offered in the U.S. The rules and regulations for healthcare vary from country to country. Patients that are very sick and have little chance of recovery have a higher willingness to try different treatments as a final resort. Medical tourism is on the rise in the U.S. Although residents of other countries such as Europe, Africa and Canada have more patients involved in medical tourism we are continuing to see a rise in the number of Americans traveling abroad for medical treatment. As the cost of healthcare and health insurance continues to soar in the U.S. more American patients will seek alternative options for high quality medical care.
