Along with aging and lack of activity comes the possibility of erectile dysfunction in many men. ED impacts the couple as much as it does the man himself in the fact that intimacy suffers. While medication such as Viagra can address impotence and get man and his partner back into a satisfying sexual routine, there are other medications that may be prescribed as one gets older that can add to sexual dysfunction. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that one in four cases of ED can be traced back to prescription medications. If you have been dealing with occasional impotence or even more than occasional, you will want to make an appointment with your doctor to see what can be done to address it. They may run a physical complete with blood work to see if there are any other underlying reasons why impotence is occurring. You will need to be honest with them, however, and let your doctor know how often impotence has been impacting you and if you can remember any trigger event. Being out of shape, overweight, suffering from diabetes or even depression can lead to impotence as well. Your doctor may prescribe anti-depressants, work with you to get your weight under control and even work on an exercise routine to help keep your weight in line. It may be a bit embarrassing to talk with your doctor about all of this private information but it is necessary to obtain the help necessary to get back into a satisfying sexual lifestyle. There are many prescription drugs that can lead to impotence and you will want to tell your physician what kind of medications you’re on so he can make an informed diagnosis. Drugs such as statins and fibrates, which are prescribed to treat high cholesterol, can impact virility and a man’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Additionally, high cholesterol can impact a man’s ability to achieve an erection as lack of blood flow through the body means a lack of blood flow to the penis. Many of the medications that are prescribed that can cause ED are given to men as they age and more of those include medications to address high or low blood pressure. Antidepressants, which are prescribed to address anxiety and other disorders, can inhibit a man’s ability to achieve an erection as well. As long as your doctor is fully informed on the types of medications you’re taking and for what purpose they will be able to work with you to undertake a regimen that can allow you to keep taking the medications you need while also working toward getting you and your partner back into a satisfying sexual life once again.
