Medieval Outfits Evolving Features
The evolution of medieval outfits was somehow inspired by the production of clothing and textiles, though there was still a big difference between each culture, about how and what they wear. For instance, the Byzantines started exporting rich and elegant clothing fabrics, and the upper-class men and the nobles, along with the royalties started wearing them. There was also a main difference with medieval outfits according to how these people lived. The tribes which were known as conquerors and invaders have worn battle-inspired clothing such as tunics, trousers and belts. The status of an individual is only an addition to the clothing manner during the medieval period.
The evolving features of medieval outfits were indeed instigated by a lot of factors, particularly the status, wealth and culture. Take note that trading the medieval trading industry had also a greater impact with medieval outfits. During this time, the Byzantines began an import and export of silk cloth and cotton with other European countries. Later, a trade betwee
Europe and the Muslims was established. The exchange of goods betwee
European countries was also popular during the medieval period, including clothing products like bleached linen and wools with sophisticated designs. These products are used by the elites. For those who cannot afford these goods, their clothes are usually made and woven at home. Lower class individuals have also worn wools which are not dyed.
Time had also affected a change in medieval outfits. Every century, modifications on medieval clothing were noted. Up to the 13th century, their clothing was made simple and uniform. For instance, during the 12th century, men and women have only worn the traditional tunics. As observed, only the nobles have taken too much focus on changing their style and outfits, compared to the lower class men.
After the 13th century, there was a development, new clothing materials, other than the tunic, were produced. These include dyed wool, bleached linens, cotton, and fustian cloths. Italy had also brought fashionable silks, along with the trade from China and Egypt.
It is said that the 14th century was the starting point of the medieval fashion. Tailoring was introduced which made medieval outfits more stylish. Many of the traditional clothing designs were replaced with a more contemporary scheme. For instance, curved seams became popular when making clothes through tailoring. Clothing accessories also became common, like buttons and laces. In the mid-century, men used clothes with contrasting fabrics. The medieval outfit became more colorful and stylish.
