An intrauterine system (IUS), a contraceptive device, is placed inside the womb from where it releases synthetic progestogen hormone into the bloodstream. It is small ‘T’ shaped coil that remains effective for up to five years after being placed inside. It is considered extremely effective as the clinical trials shows almost 100% success in preventing unplanned pregnancy. This contraceptive is comprised of artificial progestogen known as levonorgestrel, and thus is helpful to women who cannot endure oestrogen effect. As a result, it has less potential to cause any severe side effects. It acts just as a contraceptive and does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infection.
Mirena, the only IUS coil available, is a long-term and reversible contraceptive. It contains levonorgestrel as its primary ingredient which is an artificial version of the natural hormone progestogen. It prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, altering the womb lining and making the cervical mucus viscous. This IUS coil is inserted by a doctor or nurse, and once inserted it protects you against pregnancy for up to five years. It can only be inserted under the supervision of a certified doctor or it may cause unnecessary troubles. After inserting Mirena IUS inside, you need to visit your doctor after three to six weeks of fitting it to ensure that everything is fine. The IUS is inserted within the first seven days of your period, and it takes around15 to 20 minutes to place an IUS inside. It is usually done by holding your vagina in the same way as it is done during a cervical smear test, and the coil inserted through the cervix into the womb.

This contraceptive coil has proved to be extremely helpful for women who suffer from heavy, painful or prolonged periods. It is also prescribed to women who need to prevent endometriosis after menopause. However, there are certain medical conditions which can prevent you from using Mirena safely of which you can find out more here. In such cases, the doctor may recommend you an alte
ative method. The health complications can be listed as breast cancer, heart diseases, women using HRT with a history of arterial diseases, inflammation of the cervix or genital infections.

Some of the biggest benefits of using Mirena IUS coil are summed up below:

  • It is effective for up to five years
  • It is a convenient form of contraception i.e. you do not need to do anything once it is inserted inside
  • It is as effective as sterilisation process
  • It reduces menstrual cramps
  • It can treat moderate fibrosis
  • It can uncomfortable alleviate PMS symptoms
  • It does not interfere with sex

Just like other prescription hormonal contraceptives, you have a risk of developing some side effects after using this contraceptive device. However, these side effects are mild and temporary. Moreover, an IUS contains only progestogen hormone and thus you are less likely to develop the common side effects which women usually experience after taking combined contraceptive pills. The potential side effects after using the device can be breast tende
ess, irregular periods and acne. Some rare side effects are ovarian cyst, depression, inflammation of the womb, adverse effect on hair, bloating and excessive water retention. However, these are rare possibilities to the extent that only one in 1,000 women experiences this.
