Kitchens seem to be the part of the house that go out of date the fastest. Appliances quickly lose their steam and are bested by newer models. Surfaces are prey to wear and tare. Cabinets and counter tops appear dull and out-of-date. This is probably why kitchen remodeling is the most common home renovation task. Many people find themselves simply unable to make use of their old, cluttered kitchens. Others are in need of a more rustic look --or want something ultramodern. Whatever your reasons, it is of the utmost important that you consider some things before getting your hands dirty. The first thing to consider is your needs. Do you want new counter tops because they are worn and unusable? Do you think a kitchen island would be a better use of space? Whatever your needs and wants, they must be balanced against your budget. Kitchen remodeling can quickly turn into a money sick. First a person wants new floors, then they want complimentary cabinets and matching handles and matching lighting and sink fixtures. Soon enough they are not only in debt--they find themselves in a never-ending work zone. Clearly define what you are capable of spending, and commit yourself to that budget. You’ll also have to consider the time, effort, and labor considerations. Are you the one who is going to be doing this project, or will you hire labor to do it? It’s great to finish a project all on your own, but only if you really understand how many hours you are going to be working at it. If your time is best spent elsewhere, you should consider hiring a contractor. You’ll also want to consider the concept for your kitchen remodeling project. Are you trying to invoke a modernist feeling, with clean lines and striking colors? Or are you looking for that rustic, old-Italy homey style? Make sure your design intentions don’t clash. There are hundreds of design magazines that you should take some time to flip through. Inspiration comes from surprising places, so keep an open mind! Don’t be afraid to do something bold, creative, and personal with your kitchen.
