Call them SNAG’s – Sensitive New Age Guys or men that are genuinely trying to rescue an ailing relationship. Our practice now sees as many as 75% of males seeking counsel. So what has lead to this new revolution?

Once upon a time, the first stages of a marriage breakdown saw the wife looking to rescue the relationship whilst dragging the husband through the door of a marriage counselor, most often against his will. Though today the tables are turned, when we do see couples the numbers are declining with the men taking more initiative, sometimes on the quiet to see how they can fix the relationship before it fails.

Gone are the days when the stubborn, crossed armed, gruff husband would sit there almost refusing to talk. We have also found it more constructive to see couples individually, at least in the early days, as we find the truth tends to flow more easily. When couples are together at a session their can be some inhibitions, or reluctance to say what they truly think.

When couples come as an individuals we get hear both sides of the story, and after years of experience, and quite often to the surprise of those that see us; we get to hear the same common patterns, beliefs, gripes and issues that cause a relationship to breakdown. Many experience the same things, so we can quickly help the client identify their own problems and also look at the effect they are having upon the relationship. Yes that is true, as it takes two to tango.

So men, congratulations for taking the first step, it is equally as much your responsibility as it is your partners. Let it be known that not all men are bastards, and not all women are perfect either. And without stating the obvious, both men and women think differently; it has happened for centuries, and will continue to do so for many more to come. Accept that we all have our faults and all it may take is some compromise, and understanding for one another.

We wish you all the best, and do not be afraid of seeking help in a professional marriage counselor.

It’s the Holy Grail in the world of addiction to find drugs that will block the craving for alcohol. There are three medications on the market that have been studied and show some benefits. Pros and Cons of Drug Used for Alcohol Dependency or to Block Craving Campral, also known as Acamprosate, is used to block craving.
