Employee selection is nothing but selecting right personnel for right job. The organizational requirements are matched with the experience, skills and qualifications of applicants. To get effective selection, the matching needs effective. The best candidates can offer quality performance to the organization. The proper selection reduces employee turnover and repetitive selection or recruitment processes. It also leads in saving time and money in this process.
While hiring candidates for vacant jobs or openings, the process goes through quick lookup of resume and an interview to full resume review by a committee and a long duration interviews with many departments within organization. In big organizations or having multiple levels of employees, interview processes are lengthy.
Let us see how employee selection process works. Usually, it starts with the application or resume. The HR people or recruiting people often look the applicant’s resume for the following aspects –
- If the candidate possess required educational qualifications/ certifications/ skills.
- If the candidate has sufficient work experience according to job requirement.
- If there are any gaps in the employment and if the gaps are there, what are the reasons behind it?
- If there are details of job profiles or responsibilities handled in earlier jobs and that are matching with the current opening.
- If the history of candidate, assure constant/ reliable performance records.
- If the resume shows instances of increased responsibility is work profile.
All these marks provide measures in determining if the candidate is right to do the job successfully. Interview is more reliable method for selection of candidates. Many things can be revealed through an interview or series of interviews. The interview may be structured or unstructured, it is expected that candidate should provide variety of information. The main aims of interview are –
- It reveals the interest of candidate in a position.
- It verifies candidates experience, skills and activities.
- It tries to discover attitude of candidate.
These are the simple goals of any interview of recruitment. But, the process of interview is much more detailed. The interviewer has to prepare a good questionnaire that reveals all the points discussed above. In addition, he should be much prepared for the questions may likely asked by the candidate. Similarly, candidate should be well prepared to answer satisfactorily to the interviewer.
The information given in the resume must be correct and accurate; any discrepancy may lead to rejection of candidate. Employee selection process is very vital for any organization regardless of the type of organization. Placing right persons that fit the position is very important for the successful business.
