Let’s get moving and shaking! Now I’m well aware- you may have some quick objections to exercise. “I don’t have time for it. I hate the gym. I’m not athletic. I can’t stand to get sweaty.” I get it. I hear you. (I have some myself!) In fact, formal exercise may not be for everyone.

But guess what? You need to get moving- in some shape, style or form. We all do.

So you might be thinking to yourself: “If I don’t like the gym, I hate to exercise, and I’m not particularly athletic- what can I do?” Well, I’m so glad you asked! Today I want to go through some of the “other” ways to get moving. We are going to use our creativity, passions, talents and hobbies to move our bodies today!

  • Shake that thing, Mz. Thing. Get moving and grooving!! One way to embrace a healthier body is to get up off your rump in other ways. Do you enjoy the salsa, cha-cha, or ballroom dancing? Can you just blast some good old drum and bass music and jump around like a lunatic? Wiggle your butt, shrug your shoulders, and shake your hips. Just get dancing, people!!
  • How about the great outdoors? Even if you are not “an athlete” do you like to be outside? How about taking your loved one for a romantic hike in the mountains? What about bringing your kids to a romp and run in the park? (And don’t just sit there with your favorite book; get off of the park bench and welcome your inner child to swing on the swings and slide down the slide!). What about the water? Can you ease into a kayak, float away on a canoe, or row yourself to moving that healthy you?
  • Informal sports are a good way to break a sweat. And I’m not saying you have to be an “athlete”. So stick with me for a moment. Can you join a social kickball or adult softball league? When was the last time you volunteered to help out with Field Day or co-coach a little league team? Maybe you’re not a runner or biker- but what about swimming? Ice skating? Roller blading? We all have SOMETHING inside of us that just wants to get out!
  • Enlist the help of your LIFE. Call upon your closest pals. Take a shopping day but don’t just slowly browse. Power-walk your way through that mall! Or look around the home. Your garden is crying for weeding. Your windows are begging for a washing. Throw on some oldies and get moving and grooving around the house!

Again, we all have healthy bodies inside of us just wishing to get out. No one wants to sit still all day. We get weak; we get tired; we feel pain. Soreness and tightness are just signs the body wants to move. Everyone can find SOMETHING they can do to move it up!

What about you? How will you get creative with your movement? What variety will you try? I’d love to hear how you are going to shake things up and get that body moving as it always wants to!
