MS is a chronic disease which often lead to depression among MSpatients. Depression can be treated effectively with number of wayssuch as medications, counseling and self-care. The initial response of receiving news that you have a chronic illness is often quite devastating and because of that, depression is one of the most commonly noted emotional MS symptoms. Living with such complications can intensify the emotional lows. Studies based on patient also suggest a higher rate of anxiety ,personality and mood changes among MS patients. Your Emotional Health : rnThe significant stress of being diagnosed with a chronic illness can trigger such psychological issues as depression and anxiety all on its own. But other factors can play a role, too. Such as: 1) Side effects of medications: MS medication used to slow the progression of multiple sclerosis, may make depression or mood changes worse in some people. Certain steroids, used in treating flare-ups, can also cause or worsen depression. 2) Effect of MS on the brain: rnMultiple Sclerosis affects both the central nervous system and the brain itself. If the disease attacks a part of the brain then it may cause depression and other psychological issues. MS Symptoms: Recognizing the Signs of an Emotional Problem Everyone feels sad or nervous from time to time, but there are signals that can indicate if you have a potentially serious problem such as depression or anxiety. Like all MS symptoms, signs of an emotional issue often vary from person to person, but these are some common symptoms and key changes to be aware of: 1) Changes in appetite: Often people while dealing with an emotional issue like depression or anxiety find that their appetite is affected. 2) Changes in sleep patterns: Both sleeping less (insomnia) and sleeping more than usual can be signs of an emotional problem. 3) Changes in energy level: People with emotional issues can experience both restlessness and fatigue. For people living with MS, fatigue is already a common complaint. 4) Depressed mood: This can manifest itself as feelings of sadness, anxiety, or irritability. Feelings of worthlessness and guilt can also develop. Living with MS: Getting Help for an Emotional Issue For people living with MS, figuring out what's causing the problem is often the first step toward finding an appropriate treatment. If you are experiencing signs of depression or another emotional issue, consult your doctor. 1) Medications: There are many effective anti-anxiety drugs and antidepressants that your doctor may prescribe if depression or other symptoms are severe. 2) Counseling:rnIt is also called psychotherapy or talk therapy, this form of treatment can be useful on its own or in combination with prescribed medications. 3) Self-care: Every person is different, and what helps one person cope with an emotional problem may not be useful to another. In general, exercise, spending time with friends or family, and frequently participating in an activity that you enjoy are all good places to start. If stress seems to be an exacerbating factor in your emotional reactions, you might also consider such alternative treatments as massage therapy, acupuncture, or muscle relaxation techniques.
