When my son graduated high school recently, he began the process of trying to figure out what next. I had hoped he would start out at a community college, transfer to a university, and end up with some sort of degree and a great paying job. Of course, I also wanted him to be happy. It didn't take long for me to realize, mainstream college just wasn't for him. We both started looking for other options and to my surprise we ended up stumbling on music production colleges.

As a hipster mom, I mea
I wasn't that old yet, I thought I could easily relate. I had graduated college myself, not long before having him. But things were different now. Traditional trade schools and universities were no longer the only option. Specialty schools were springing up too.

Even though I felt hesitant, I tried to keep an open mind. It didn't seem like a real education at first. The idea of the entertainment industry didn't excite me either, but I still checked into it. After some research, it started looking more probable.

The training is unique and interesting. Everything from specialty classes, to basics on business and marketing. And when you graduate, instead of some worthless paper, you walk away with a real degree. They have programs for both bachelors and masters, so you can go as far as you want!

Once we started peaking into the courses available, it started looking really cool. There was classes on everything from how to manage the artists, to developing a brand. Stuff he could actually make a career out of! It was a perfect compromise. A degree to give me peace of mind, in an atmosphere he could love and actually enjoy.

I was pleased when I spoke to the receptionist at the college. She was both sweet, and knowledgeable. It made it harder to hate the idea. There was a forum of mother's online that I stumbled on. They answered several of my questions and shared their experiences. It was helpful to feel validated, that I'd really done my homework in looking at all sides. Their stories made it seem feasible.

In the end, I did enroll my son, and he starts in the fall. I can't say yet if I made the right choice. Only time, and his happiness will prove or disprove that. But, I do feel that music production colleges are a great new option. Not all kids fit into the cookie cutter design. Some are colorful, and like to create the lines for themselves. For them, this could be just the thing!
