There are not too many things that can compare with the feeling of sliding down on pristine snow on a gorgeous sunny day. Nowhere will you find the same feeling. We do indeed love skiing or snoboarding. Of course we always want ourselves and our buddies to return safely after a day out in the mountains. And that would be the reason we feel so compelled to share the following safety tips with other skiers or snowboarders.
You need to learn how to read your routes for tell-tale signs of past events. You always hear about the huge avalanches on the news. The news stories do a good job of showing how devastating and unforgiving this natural disaster can be. What you may not realize is that a small avalanche can kill you just as quickly as a big one. It's really about experience when it comes to reading your routes. It's also not the easiest skill to acquire either, but it's not something you should ignore at all. It can often be difficult to spot the variations in the terrain but it's important that you look for them. As you study the terrain, you may be able to spot potential hazards as well as recognize signs of past damage.
One aspect that skiers and riders tend to forget is keeping hydrated while out doing something you find to be really enjoyable. You might be astounded to find out how fast you can become dehydrated and that can severely affect your energy levels. Not only that, you can also suffer horrible muscle cramps in your legs, simple as a result of a lack of water in your system. You know how hurtful a muscle cramp can be, we do for sure, and you don't want to have one happen when you're in a risky turn or maneuver that requires all your focus and skill. Make sure to take with you some energy bars and water and this is particularly crucial if you are out and away from other people.
Efficiency of turns is one thing you can do to advance your skiing skills. Easier said than done is the ceasing of wedging during turns. However, it's a skill that just requires learning like all else in our sport, and we feel that once you do it you'll be able to have more control. You'll be better able to stop wedging if you learn to ski with one foor. Just shift your balance to one side. Then while doing that, you'll lighten-up and slightly tip your other side - the ski and foot. After you master this you'll have a bit more control. We love our double edge swords. Every fall we get a hankering to hit the slopes. So be sure all your gear is in top condition and ready to go. Plan before your outing, and always ski with a buddy you trust.
