MY SUN IS IN ARIES.

I was born in early Spring, betwee
March 20th and 19th April, when the Sun was in Aries, the Sign of the Ram. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, beginning at the Spring Equinox. From this point onwards (in the northern hemisphere) the days are longer than the nights. Spring has sprung!

Aries is the cardinal fire sign. Cardinal signs show an equal balance of power and adaptability, whereas Fixed signs like Taurus are more powerful than adaptable, and Mutable signs like Pisces are more adaptable than powerful. The Cardinal signs are the best suited to beginning things. They have enough power to push the new thing forward, and enough adaptability to adapt to what came previously. No one creates anything from nothing- there was always something there before. The Fixed signs find it hard to compromise, which is always necessary at the start of any new endeavour. The Mutable signs compromise too much, and cannot break free from existing convention. The Cardinal signs hold the balance of power and adaptability, till their new project is securely established.

Fire is the liveliest, warmest, lightest element, most volatile and hardest to contain. Fire represents the spiritual level of the personality. The spirit understands the world through intuition- immediate perception of reality without the need of logical analysis. The spirit’s strength is measured by its capacity for belief. The spirit moves and acts through imagination. So the fiery personality is intuitive, imaginative, and believing. Everything begins with fire. Every atom in our bodies was born in the heart of a burning star! Every system of ideas is first conceived imaginatively and intuitively, before being developed through the cool analysis of rational thought. Every achievement in the “real world” begins when someone believes it possible- maybe centuries before it actually happens.

So if everything begins with Fire, and if Cardinal signs are the best for beginning things, then the very best sign of for beginning anything must by Aries- the cardinal fire sign! Aries begins the zodiac, and we Arians are happiest when we are beginning things! We love novelty and change! We cannot tolerate boredom and routine! The slow, plodding, earth-bound Taurean makes us want to scream- “we know, we know, get on with it already!”

We always favour the new, untried idea against the old established way of doing things. So we always find ourselves in conflict with those who fear novelty and change. Our symbol is the ram, who butts his horns against his rival- going “head to head!” We’re like a battering ram, bashing down locked doors, “ramming home” the points we wish to make! We are combative, assertive, and competitive- we have to be, for there are so many other new ideas jostling with ours. Besides which, we know that we right! Surrender would be a dereliction of our duty. If you want our respect- fight back!

Some people call Aries a “masculine” sign. What nonsense! There are just as many women born in early Spring as there are men. What is true is that the Arian woman demands the same autonomy as the Arian male. She too is innovative and assertive, ready to defend herself, and to compete for what she wants. Do not expect the Arian woman to sit quietly, waiting to be asked or noticed. Do not expect her to defer to your authority, or to bite her tongue. The Arian woman needs a man who’s not afraid of her, who doesn’t need to protect his own weak personality by suppressing her.
