I was born in early Summer, between May 20th and 20th June, when the Sun was in Gemini, the Sign of the Twins. Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac. Gemini is the mutable air sign. Mutable signs are more adaptable than powerful, whereas Fixed signs like Taurus are more powerful than adaptable, and Cardinal signs like Aries show an equal balance of power and adaptability. Mutable signs are the most sensitive, the most responsive to the needs, thoughts and feelings of other people, and the best able to adapt to changing situations beyond their control. This is a kind of strength, and certainly not a weakness. Constant change is a necessary part of life- so there will always be many changes to which we must adapt, being unable to prevent them. Air is heavier than fire, but lighter than water and earth. It is livelier than water- easier to move- and more transparent also. We can see the stars through the atmosphere, but we cannot see far down into the ocean. Air is more containable than fire- it will not burn through its container- but less containable than water. We can carry air in a tightly sealed vessel, not an open bucket. Air is cooler than fire, but warmer than water- in a hot climate we would cool ourselves by bathing. In all things then, Air is intermediate between Fire and Water, while Earth is the densest, darkest, coldest, most inert and most opaque of all the elements. Air represents the thinking or mental level of the personality. On this level we understand the world through systematic thought, finding or creating patterns by which we can make sense of things. This kind of thinking is more limited, less free, than the imaginative thinking represented by the element of fire. It is also “cooler”, less fiercely inspired. Logical thinking requires effort, whereas intuitive fiery thinking is instantaneous, even appearing unexpectedly in dreams. This kind of logical, systematic thinking is closely connected with speech, and with the other forms of communication based on speech, such as writing. The airy personality is therefore cool, communicative, and rational- at least we like to think we’re being rational, even if we mostly rely on mental “short-cuts” or “rules of thumb”. Having clarified the qualities of air signs and mutable signs, the specific quality of Gemini should now be obvious. Gemini people are above all “responsive thinkers and communicators”. We love conversation with as many different people as possible. We want to absorb and respond to their ideas, and we’re sufficiently adaptable to take in all of those ideas even though they’re not compatible with each other. This incompatibility doesn’t bother us, partly because we see some sense in all of them, but also because we don’t look deep enough to really see the contradictions. Here’s a problem- we agree with Jack, and later we agree with Jill- and then when Jack and Jill, who vehemently disagree, realise that we’ve agreed with both of them, they accuse us of being two-faced! Our symbol is the twins, and notice that the twins are human. If you check the other air signs, you’ll see that Aquarius is another human figure, while Libra is a man-made object- a measuring instrument in fact. The only other fully human figure is Virgo, so we see that the air signs have by far the most human symbols, because only humans can speak, and the air signs are all about verbal communication and the type of thinking that is based on speech. Logical thought is like a conversation with your self. This is why many of us “think aloud” when working out an especially complex problem. Gemini people have a great need for communication. Facebook was invented for us! We are horrified by the thought of loneliness and isolation, and cannot bear to be ignored. We aspire to know everyone, and to be friends with almost everyone. If we can introduce our friends to one another, we’re happier still! We can see some sense in every idea, although seeing the contradictions between those ideas may take more effort than we’re willing to exert. We may not be the deepest people, but life would be a lot less interesting without us! http://www.plymouth-hypnotherapist.co.ukrn
