Mycall Obas on Leaving a Legacy in Music

Mycall Obas, known as O.B.A.$. is a hip-hop artist from Connecticut who’s been in the music industry professionally since 2005. His music video BLOCK STARS hit over 150,000 views within just a few months. He’s approaching about a million views and his music has been listened to by millions around the world on a combination of popular streaming platforms. Obas says he’s most proud of a commercial project he released called: “Greatness”, which consists of 13 songs he created, recorded, mixed and mastered. “The songs touched a series of topics: entrepreneurship, growth, leadership, family, love and just being a boss,” says Obas. When we asked Obas why he decided to create music, he responded with this: “I want to leave a legacy of entrepreneurship and I want people to believe in themselves.” Obas says the music industry is difficult to enter because it’s so competitive, so you need to have a laserlike focus if you want to accomplish your dreams. His goal is to open a non-profit in the future to help people who are less fortunate. “I also want to leave something behind for my children,” says Obas. Obas says he also wants to leave a legacy of giving to others. He says it’s important to be generous once you achieve success so you can motivate other people to follow in your footsteps. “If you want to leave a legacy, you need to have an insane amount of push. This dream takes an insane amount of work, money and time,” says Obas. Obas says, “It’s one block at a time, a fan at a time and it will be repetitive.” “Everybody around you is going to think you’re crazy or you lost touch with reality because so many people are trying to do this,” says Obas. One thing that makes the industry tougher to break into is the accessibility of the internet. According to Spotify statistics, there are over 2 million artists on the streaming platform, but the top 75,000 artists generate over 95 percent of the streams. “It’s ridiculous. Even the DJ you’re trying to give your music to has an artist on his roster that’s trying to get in. The radio program you’re trying to hand your music to has artists trying to get into the music business. ” says Obas. “Even the record label executive: they have a nephew, a niece, a friend or a colleague who has a child who’s trying to get into the music business.” “This is a business that will require a certain amount of independence,” says Obas. “It’s going to take a lot of work.” Obas says you need to be relentless if you want to be successful.
