Buying a car can be a bit overwhelming. For most people, it is a very big expense, and a big commitment. Car payments are often the second largest monthly bills that people pay, next to their mortgage or rent. These payments, of course, can go on for three, four, even five years, often ending at about the time when the vehicle is ready to be replaced. Most of us try to do our research, consider our options, shop around, and do our best to get a great deal on a vehicle that will be reliable, safe, and reasonably priced. However, luck sometimes plays a part in the outcome of our vehicle purchases. Once in a while, someone gets a vehicle that has problems, manufacturer defects that keep the car from functioning properly. These problems are usually covered under warrantees, and the repairs are typically made promptly and efficiently. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, the manufacturers fail to hold up their end of the deal, and the consumer is stuck with a “lemon,” a vehicle with a manufacturing defect. Both the Pennsylvania lemon law and New Jersey lemon law were created to protect consumers in these cases. When a vehicle has obvious “non-conformities” in manufacturing that detract from its use, market value, or safety, and the defect was not caused by an accident, abuse, neglect, or action taken by anyone other than the manufacturer, that defect should be covered by the manufacturer’s warrantee. If the warrantee is still active and the owner gave the manufacturer three opportunities to repair the defect, then the manufacturer is in violation of the lemon law. Consumers who believe that their lemon law rights have been violated by a manufacturer who has failed to repair or replace a defective vehicle after three requests may contact a lemon law lawyer to look into the case. Services are available to assist with the legal pursuit of these cases, offering counsel, and even pursuing the case by contacting the manufacturer and taking the necessary steps to see that the client is compensated. Some of the better lemon law sites are truly a wealth of information, with extensive articles covering the laws themselves and methods for assessing one’s situation with reference to those laws. The better sites have forms consumers can fill in and submit with their information, to be examined by a lemon law lawyer who will respond with his or her opinion about the case, and pursue it if it is prudent to do so. As an additional service, some of these sites offer general advice about wise auto shopping, including information about common mistakes and problems, saving money, avoiding extra charges, and negotiating shrewdly. Although these sites are designed primarily for people who think they may have lemon law cases, anyone shopping for a vehicle is likely to benefit from checking them out.
