Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a really good nanny? Why do some people just fit so naturally into the role? Well, for one thing, a genuine love of children is a must, since the main job is seeing to their welfare when the parents are away. If you don’t possess an abundance of patience, don’t attempt to work at this job. Children require a lot of attention, and being able to communicate on their level is a definite requirement. As a nanny, you will be spending a major portion of your time with them, especially if they are pre-school age. Once they head off to school, you will have a little more time, but after school homework and activities will again require you to spend considerable time with them. Many people, no matter what age they may be, thrive on this kind of environment, and think that being a nanny is the best job they could possibly have. For the right person, it can be. Nannies who work with one particular family often find themselves still employed long after the children have reached their teenage years. The family grows so attached that there is no possibility of doing without her, even if the duties have lightened. Perhaps this is the type of employment you envision yourself doing. If so, it will improve your chances of obtaining this job if you were to take classes in early childhood development so that you are well prepared to take on the care of someone else’s children. If you are a college student, you may already be participating in these classes as part of your education, so you are that much further ahead. You may be considering work as a part time nanny, or one who is “on call” when needed. Being a full time student may limit the number of hours you are able to work, but you can gain plenty of experience by working through the summer months or when your school is on holiday. You may even end up working for the same family year after year, holiday after holiday. If your school has an online nanny for hire website, be sure to add your name and qualifications to the site. What should you expect to be doing as a nanny, other than caring for the children? Well, that depends on the family who hires you. Most of the time both parents work outside the home, and this is the main reason for hiring. They need someone who is capable of keeping their household running smoothly by doing specific household chores, running errands, taking the kids here and there, and a myriad of other tasks that they just can’t get to because of their working hours. This is your job, and if you are very organized, you will have no trouble at all keeping up with the various duties throughout your working day. In fact, you may actually love what you are doing! A competent nanny is dependable, responsible, and level-headed. She knows how to keep her cool during an emergency, and knows the difference between a genuine emergency situation and one that requires only a band-aid to fix. Nannies are a lot like a substitute parent, or grandparent-someone the children turn to when mom and dad are not at home. She is also the one who makes sure the parental rules are followed, such as bedtime, and when homework is to be done. Of course, there is always a bit of flexibility allowed, and many fun times to be had. The word “nanny” doesn’t mean old, stodgy, or strict, after all, even though some people may think so. Nannies nowadays are younger, very up to date, and have an abundance of energy needed to keep up with their young charges. This is one job that is rapidly growing in popularity, and someone with great qualifications and experience will find their services in great demand. More and more families are finding that two incomes are needed to stay afloat financially, and adding a nanny to the household just makes perfect sense. It’s far better than hunting for a babysitter who may or may not be available when needed. Sound interesting? If so, get some experience, and get the word out that you are looking for a nanny position.
