There are a number of reasons why you might get your teeth whitened. Everyone is different; and just as our hair and skin color vary, so do our teeth. Very few people have brilliant-white teeth, and our teeth can also become more discolored as we get older.

Your teeth can also be stained on the surface by food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and smoking.

‘Calculus' or tartar can also affect the color of your teeth. Some people may have staining under the surface, which can be caused by certain antibiotics or tiny cracks in the teeth which take up stains.

Patients who have sensitive teeth should consider using the milder solutions for bleaching, since the in-office techniques may cause additional sensitivity.

What are the side effects?

Some people may find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after the treatment. Others may have discomfort in the gums, a sore throat or white patches on the gum line. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the treatment finishing. If any of these side effects continue you should go to your dentist.

How to look after your teeth once they have been whitened?

You can help to keep your teeth white by cutting down on the amount of food and drink you have that can stain teeth. Don't forget, stopping smoking can also help prevent discoloration and staining. Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Natural teeth whitening:

The Charcoal Rub: Take a piece of Charcoal (a carbonaceous material obtained by heating wood) and rub against the yellowing tooth or teeth.
Rub gently for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Watch out not to brush your gums.
Wash off with water then brush with toothpaste as normal.

The Strawberry Method: Gather some strawberries and mash them up into a paste. Apply the paste to your teeth using a soft, clean toothbrush or finger. Leave the paste on for 2-5 minutes. Wash it all off thoroughly, including the seeds. Brush teeth with a fluoride toothpaste. Repeat every time you brush your teeth, as it will take a few days to work.

The Orange Peel Method: Peel an orange. Rub the inside (that's the paler bit with pith on it) of the orange peel all over your teeth. Brush teeth with a fluoride toothpaste. Ensure that you repeat this method every time you brush your teeth for at least a week as it will take a few days to come in action.

Home-Made Toothpaste: Mix baking soda with some toothpaste. Brush your teeth as normal with this paste once everyday. Rinse out well with clean water. Follow up with a good brand of mouthwash (Listerine, Sensodyne, etc)

Peelu Plant Fibers: Available in regular toothpaste, gum and powder form. Use ground peelu fibers like a powder toothpaste. Non-abrasive- can be used daily.
