There are many natural treatments for stomach ulcers that can be used, in case you have not realized it by now. Many people suffer from this condition nowadays. Typically, a bacterial stomach ulcer is treated with antibiotics and/or other medications. However, you may instead prefer to use natural treatments instead. Natural treatments are generally safer and with no adverse side effects. To understand how natural treatments for stomach ulcers can help, you would first need to understand the causes and symptoms of this disease.

About 80-90% of all cases of stomach ulcers are caused by a bacteria known as Helicobacter Pylori. Stomach ulcers can also be caused by a deterioration of the mucosal lining of the stomach that protects the stomach from acid. There can also be other causes to your stomach ulcers. These include excess acid production, the overuse of medications, and smoking. Some experts also say that genetic predisposition and stress are additional risk factors. The use of certain medications, such as an excessive use of aspirin, has also been known to aggravate stomach ulcers.

Stomach ulcer symptoms are often similar to those of other disorders. Hence, you may find it hard to determine what your stomach pains are caused by. Many have mistaken the burning feeling in the upper abdomen caused by stomach ulcers for heartburn. The level of pain and the length of the suffering vary with the individual. Loss of appetite and weight loss are also commonly experienced. Further symptoms are vomiting and bloody stool.

Obviously, if you smoke, or take excess aspirin or other ulcer causing medicine, then you would need to ensure that you remove the offending substance by not taking it as your first step. Then you can fight the ulcers with the following natural remedies:

  • Use herbs such as slipper elm and golden seal root to reduce inflammation and fight bacteria.
  • Add licorice to your diet. It is an anti-inflammatory agent and it will help reduce stomach acid and support the stomach lining. Chew deglycyrrhizinated licorice before eating and at bedtime.
  • Use vitamins that support the lining of your stomach such as Vitamin A and beta-carotene.
  • Eat bananas. This is an easy and natural way to soothe your stomach.
  • Increase fiber in your diet to prevent the development of some types of ulcers.
  • Take 25 to 50 mg of zinc to aid in healing.
  • Consider using relaxation techniques to reduce stress. Some tests indicate that the use of acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and massage helps the body to heal itself when you have ulcers.
  • Cut down consumption of unhealthy foods. Excessive intake of fried foods, for instance, are not good for anyone. If you are predisposed to stomach ulcers, you will want to cut out possible exacerbating foods.

Natural treatments for stomach ulcers should only be undertaken after you have consulted your health care provider about whether it is safe for you to do so. You should not live with the pain from having stomach ulcers. It is important to address the root of your problem and find ways to fight it.
