Natural remedies are based on the vital life force. These have no side effects and many health benefits for all age groups. One such remedy is cod liver oil capsules obtained from cod liver oil which is rich in essential fatty acids namely, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These capsules are natural supplements containing the required amounts of fish oil obtained from the liver of cold water fish varieties such as mackerel, anchovy, and sardines. The capsules also contain Vitamins A and D but the ratio of DHA in these capsules is higher than that of EPA. These are generally prescribed to patients with high cholesterol, high triglycerides, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart diseases, depression, middle ear infections (otitis media), and an autoimmune disease known as systemic lupus erythematosus. Cod liver oil is also applied by some on the skin for speedy recovery of wounds. These days almost everyone is turning towards natural remedy for their ailments as these have no or little side effects in the longer run. Also, natural product supplements come loaded with essential vitamins, minerals and fatty acids which help maintain a balance of these nutrients in the body. Cod liver oil capsules are loaded with Vitamins A and D, and while our body is able to form Vitamin D by itself, these capsules, majorly fulfill the Vitamin A requirements. Vitamin A is needed for proper functioning of mucous membranes that exist in the respiratory, digestive and urinary systems as well as the surface of eyes. In case the membranes are compromised, irritated or damaged, vitamin A is needed to help restore it. Vitamin A is also needed to help cure night blindness which is caused due to lack of the vitamin. However, it must be noted that cod liver oil supplements are different from fish oil supplements as the former are obtained from oil extracted out of the liver of fish (which is the storehouse of vitamin A) while the latter is obtained from the fatty flesh of the fish. Also there are certain side effects noted if the supplement is taken in higher quantities. These include, allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of face, lips or tongue, changes in vision, dark urine, unusual bleeding or bruising, yellowing of the eyes or skin. These must be reported to a practitioner immediately. Sometimes one may also encounter bad breath, dry skin, metallic taste, upset stomach and headache. Though these do not need immediate medical help, they must be evaluated if they persist for long. A normal dose of cod liver oil supplement would provide between 250-300mg of cod liver oil. Cod liver oil is also known to reduce incidence of type I diabetes if given to an infant. It helps lower the childhood onset of type 1 Diabetes. Cod liver oil is also known to help relieve pain from rheumatoid arthritis. Cod Liver oil and multivitamins in children may be helpful in treating chronic sinusitis too.
