Neuromuscular disease affects the nerves that control voluntary muscles. It is usually genetic so treatment for neuromuscular disease is often aimed at minimizing the symptoms and improving a person’s quality of life rather than seeking a cure. Neuromuscular disease includes muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease as well as neuropathies. Such a broad spectrum of illnesses requires a range of approaches for treating the specific neuromuscular disease although in many instances, relief in breathing may be part of the neuromuscular disease therapy. As illustration, muscular dystrophy consists of a more than 30 genetic diseases that lead to weakness and degeneration of skeletal muscles that control movement. In these instances, neuromuscular disease therapy will be directed to the part of the body most affected. Symptoms of muscular dystrophy are often further relieved through exercise, physical therapy and respiratory care including deep breathing and coughing. Another case is myasthenia gravis is which characterized by weakness in involuntary muscles, usually during activity. Treating this particular neuromuscular disease is also often aimed at preventing respiratory problems since the muscles that control swallowing and breathing are affected. ALS, which is characterized by progressive degeneration of nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain, may also involve difficulty swallowing as the disease progresses so respiratory care also may be part of this neuromuscular disease therapy. In each of these instances, lung clearance can be an important way to treat the neuromuscular disease. The Med Systems Fluid Flo® 2500 pneumatic percussor and Electro Flo® 5000 airway clearance device provide superior lung clearance for neuromuscular disease therapy. The Fluid Flo® 2500 pneumatic percussor is a workhorse for hospitals, while the mobile Electro Flo® 5000 airway clearance device provides a more convenient way for individuals to treat neuromuscular disease at home. The amount of force applied to the chest for treating neuromuscular disease can very widely from gentle tapping to hammering. Research has shown that more congestion is loosened with greater force. Tests confirm that Med Systems’ Fluid Flo® 2500 and Electro Flo® 5000 provide significantly more pulse force than other products and supports the claims of users that they are the most effective products available.
