New Study Points to How to Delay the Effects of Age
Modern medicine has been able to help us live longer, but not healthier. As we get older, our risk for a host of health problems rises.
But imagine if you could live well into your 90’s and beyond with a strong heart, a clear mind and stay strong and active.
We may now be much closer to that reality, thanks to groundbreaking research from the Mayo Clinic. Here’s the story…
As you get older, some of your body’s cells stop multiplying… but they don’t die. Instead, they remain in a state called “cellular senescence.”
You immune system normally clears these cells out, keeping your body healthy. But as you get older, your immune system becomes less effective. And these deadbeat cells start to add up.
By the time you reach your 90’s, 10 – 15% of all your body’s cells may be senescent, or aging. And that’s bad, because these cells produce toxins that damage healthy cells.
For a long time, scientists have thought that senescent cells may contribute to the health problems related to aging. Now we know that’s true.
For their experiment, the Mayo Clinic team genetically engineered mice. Senescent cells in these mice contained a unique molecule that could be attacked by a drug, killing the cell. But the drug wouldn’t affect healthy cells.
Then the researchers gave the drug to mice at various ages.
Giving the drug to mice for their entire lives caused a significant delay in developing health problems linked to age.
Older mice benefitted, too. They already had age-related health issues. But getting the drug slowed the progression of these problems.1
There’s still a lot of work to be done before any of this will translate to humans. But it does point to something you can do now.
Since we know your immune system helps get rid of senescent cells, keeping it healthy and strong may have a similar anti-aging effect. So here are a few easy ways to boost your immune system …
• Take a probiotic supplement. Your digestive system is your body’s first line of defense. Probiotics help keep it in shape… and support your body’s defenses against unhealthful bacteria.
• Get plenty of antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that cause cell damage and can tax your immune system.
• Exercise regularly. Studies show that moderate exercise enhances your immune defenses. Get 20 – 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least 3 times a week.
• Get a good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep depresses your immune system’s ability to cope with attacks. Most people need 7 – 9 hours of sleep a night.

Moving Meditation: How Precision-Based Exercise Supports Mental and Emotional Growth
