Nine Simple Ways To Slim Down Whether you want to shed 5 pounds or 50, watching what you eat and getting exercise are the best ways to achieve your goal. If the prospect of overhauling your entire lifestyle seems daunting, try implementing these 9 little ideas, instead. 1. Share an entree when you go out to eat. Restaurant portions have ballooned, and a meal for one could easily feed two or three people. Simply ask your server for a second plate and split your meal. If you have no one else to share with, immediately package half of your food in a to-go box to take home for another meal. 2. Shop the perimeter of the store for the healthiest, most wholesome foods. Meats, dairy products, fruits and veggie's are all located around the outer ring of your grocery or supermarket, while processed foods are usually stocked in the center aisles. Load up on fresh, whole foods before ducking into the middle aisles for spices, dried or canned beans, rice and other healthy staples. 3. Purchase smaller dinnerware. In recent years, oversized bowls and plates have become trendy, but they may lead to inadvertent overeating, since you tend to fill your plate. Instead, search for plates that are no larger than 9 inches in diameter. You can still enjoy a full plate of food this way, with much more reasonable portions. 4. If exercising feels like a chore, work out while doing something you enjoy. There is no reason that you must sit on the couch while watching your favorite TV shows or mindlessly surfing the web. You can easily walk on a treadmill, do aerobics, or stretch while the TV is on; if nothing else, hop up and do some jumping jacks during commercial breaks. You could also listen to audio books or music while walking, jogging or running. However, you should make sure that your entertainment doesn't impede your ability to pay attention to your surroundings. 5. Take a walk. No matter your age or level of activity, walking is a generally a safe, non-intimidating way to ease yourself into exercising. So long as you wear supportive shoes, walking is easy on your joints. You can also walk almost anywhere--to and from work, around your building, at the mall, or around your neighborhood. 6. Track the foods you eat. Holding yourself accountable for the foods you eat can motivate you to improve your diet and consume fewer calories. If a pen-and-paper journal doesn't appeal to you, look into an app for your smart phone or tablet. 7. Make healthy substitutions in your favorite recipes. This is a great way to keep enjoying the foods you like while reducing the calories you consume. Try swapping fat-laden sour cream for plain Greek yogurt, for instance, as a topping for baked potatoes and tacos. 8. Drink plenty of water. Not only is water essential for your overall health, but you must replenish the fluids lost through exercise. In addition, the feelings of hunger and thirst may be easily confused; have a glass of water before you eat to see if it satisfies the pang. 9. Move a little every day. Whether you tackle your grimy kitchen floor on your hands and knees or go for a jog, making physical activity a priority each and every day helps to create a habit. You may even start to crave your daily walk! Losing weight does not necessarily mean that you have to change every aspect of your lifestyle. Making small but significant changes can help you ease into a healthier mindset and create lifelong habits that help you maintain a healthy weight.
