Keeping teeth and gums healthy, bright and free of disease does not have to be difficult. The following nine tips are small ways in which you can utilize good dental habits to improve the health of one’s teeth. 1. Brush correctly and frequently Brushing is a daily necessity and should be done a minimum of twice a day. Brushing helps keep teeth clean by getting rid of excess food left over from eating which in turn decreases the chances of gum disease. Those looking to improve the quality of their gums and teeth should brush after every meal for a minimum of one minute. Dental professionals recommend replacing toothbrushes every three months to give the most thorough cleaning. Visit general dentistry in silver spring for better health tips. 2. Floss regularly Flossing removes excess food that cannot be reached by a toothbrush. Flossing once a day removes sticky plaque left over from food and reduces chances of developing gum disease. Flossing properly entails moving a segment of floss up and down along all the spaces in between teeth. 3. Have a proper diet Bacteria feeds off sugary foods that get stuck in and around teeth. By eating healthy and avoiding sugary or starchy foods, bacteria will have a less favorable environment in which to grow. Oral bacteria are a cause of gum disease and killing them can prevent the disease from developing. 4. Visit a dental professional Dentists are a necessity in keeping the mouth clean. Visiting a dental professional twice a year ensures that teeth get a deep clean and are examined for any existing issues. A dental professional is more likely to notice signs and symptoms of oral diseases and put into place preventative actions to keep teeth healthy or treatment plans to address issues early. 5. Use mouthwash Swishing mouthwash, especially mouthwash that contains fluoride, can kill bacteria in the mouth and remove excess food. Using fluoride mouthwash is the most efficient way to protect teeth because it strengthens tooth enamel making it harder for it to be penetrated by tooth decay. 6. Avoid teeth grinding and other strenuous activities Teeth should only be used for their intended purpose, which is chewing food. When teeth are grinding together or used as a tool to open bottles or packages, they can break or lose teeth. Using teeth properly helps to keep them in their proper form and free of unnecessary trauma. 7. Understand gum disease Gum disease is caused by bacterium that feeds off foods stuck between teeth. As bacteria eat the food particles, it creates plaque, which, in turn, irritates the gums. Symptoms of gum disease include inflamed gums, bad smelling breath, loose teeth and a shrinking gum line. Knowing the symptoms of gum disease can allow you to prevent it from getting worse when it is found in its early stages. 8. Clean your tongue Keeping the tongue clean is helpful for overall oral health. Brushing the tongue ensures that it is clean and not covered with food that can attract bacteria. Poor tongue cleaning can result in bad smelling breath. Having a clean tongue also confirms that the taste buds are working properly and not dying. 9. Quit using tobacco products Tobacco can be detrimental to overall health, but it also affects oral health. Smoking or chewing tobacco causes teeth to lose their white color and even cause bone or tooth loss. Smoking causes bad breath due to excess plaque buildup and increases the chance of developing oral cancer. Avoiding tobacco products is a necessity to maintaining the quality of one’s teeth.
