NK/T-Cell Lymphoma - Symptoms, Diagnoses & Treatment

NK/T cell Lymphoma in nose is a rare and aggressive type of non Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) which can start in T cells but develops mainly in natural killer (NK) cells. It is a unique tumor . This lesion causes local destruction of the cartilage ,bone and soft tissues.It occurs in two forms: Extranodal NK/T cell Lymphoma (outside the lymph node or glands) , nasal – type - mostly in the nose and Aggressive NK cell Leukeamia.

NK/T cell Lymphoma in nose mostly affects men around the age of 50 to 60 years. It is more common in Asia, Central American and South America . It is associated with Epstein Barr virus which is found in the blood of the affected person. It occurs in upper aerodigestive tract .It is called Extra nodal because it develops in organs or tissues other than the lymph nodes. It may also affect skin, soft tissues, kidneys, testicles, brain or spinal cord, salivary gland, eyes, respiratory tract, Gastrointestinal tract and adrenal glands.

The patients having lymphoma in the nasal area are considered to be in early stage of the disease while the ones who have lymphoma in the other organs are considered to be in the advanced stage of the disease.

Symptoms of NK/T Cell Lymphoma

NK/T cell Lymphoma leads to development of a destructive mass inside the nose or the sinuses around the nose. The most common symptoms include:

• Swelling of the face

• Nasal congestion or blocked nose along with bleeding and discharge

• Sinus pains, headaches

• Weepy or watery eyes and visual changes

• Fever which is mostly unexplained

• Unintentional weight loss which could be possibly due to problem in swallowing

• Night sweating

• Problems with teeth and fowl smelling breath

• Immune system dysfunctioning

• In case of NK/T cell lymphoma developing into hemophagocytic syndrome the patient experiences a larger size liver and spleen and decrease in RBC's, WBC's and platelet count. Anemia is only seen in advanced cases.

Diagnoses of NK/T Cell Lymphoma

CT- PET scan and Bone marrow biopsy are done to diagnose and confirm NK/T cell Lymphoma. It is difficult to diagnose as symptoms mislead the physicians in most cases. A complete blood test is done. NK/T cell lymphoma is differentiated by detecting the type of proteins expressed on the surface of the cancer cell and by the way they look under a microscope when examined by a pathologist.
