I run really slowly. Like, turtle slllooowww. I am 6 feet tall and look like a runner, but don't let my body type trick you. I can probably walk faster than I run most of the time. Because of that, when I was training for my first triathlon, I came so close to quitting because I was so scared to finish last. Since I run so slow, I put a lot of pressure on myself when I run with someone else. I feel bad that they're running much slower than normal and that I'm not challenging them. I feel dumb that I honestly cannot run any faster, and so then I get frustrated that I lag behind when going up a hill. It may sound like I'm making excuses here, but I literally cannot push my legs any faster. The other day I came across this awesome picture ontriathlon is a great way to challenge yourself and become more self assured regardless of the fact that running is not your strongest sport! Think about it, the majority of people just sit on the couch in front of their computer all day. The fact that you tied up your sneakers and went running is fabulous, even if you think you ran really slow! It is easy to get discouraged as you train for your first triathlon if you continually compare yourself tostrong runners. So before you start training for your first triathlon, make sure you have a doable goal that challenges yourself, and remember, no matter how slow you run, as long as you get out there, you are lapping everyone on the couch!
