Hemorrhoids are painful, swollen veins in the rectum or anus. Many people will suffer from hemorrhoids at some point in life. There are several options for Non-Surgical Hemorrhoid Removal that are straightforward and can be accomplished through changes in lifestyle such as dieting and weight loss. Over-the-counter treatments can also help make life with hemorrhoids more bearable.

If your hemorrhoids are mild, try adding more fiber to your diet. Fiber helps to keep the bowels from becoming blocked. Daily fiber and increased water intake keep the bowels moving and reduce straining during bowel movements. High fiber foods include wheat and oat bran, broccoli, whole-grain foods, fresh fruit and beans. Gradually increase fiber intake to cut down on any gas and bloating symptoms.

Over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams that have an anesthetic can bring relief. Creams and suppositories that have hydrocortisone can also help as well as witch hazel pads. Sitting on a cushion can help reduce hemorrhoid swelling. Sitting in a warm water bath for 20 minutes can help relieve muscle spasms and relieve the itching and irritation of hemorrhoids. Avoid soap and after each bath, pat the anal area dry. Do not wipe or rub or dry the area with a hair dryer.

If these remedies do not help, you may need to look further. Your doctor may try several non-surgical procedures to shrink the hemorrhoids. These include putting a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid or injecting it with a solution to cut off the blood supply. Other methods cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid with infrared light or a laser. All of these methods will eventually shrink the hemorrhoid. If none of these methods work, surgery may be necessary to remove the hemorrhoids.

One of the newer non-surgical procedures uses a very low direct current that is gently applied to the hemorrhoid, targeting the blood vessel leading to the hemorrhoid. When blood flow to the hemorrhoid is interrupted, the hemorrhoid begins to shrink. It will continue to shrink for 7-10 days after treatment. The procedure only takes about 10 minutes to perform and requires no anesthesia or special preparations. Patients are able to return to their normal activities right after treatment.
