Northolt Once Saxon Town Now Gateway To The West

Northolt is a suburb of the London Borough of Ealing in the west of the city. The suburb is both a part of Greater London and also in the county of Middlesex. Situated in Zone 5, Northolt occupies a leafy and quiet part of London. From Northolt it's just as easy to go into central London for a night out as it is to get out of London for a jaunt to the country. Northolt started her days as a medieval village during Saxon times and is even recorded in the Doomsday Book. For approximately 1300 years it remained a rural area, where arable crops were produced and a quiet, country lifestyle was enjoyed by the small population that resided there. This all changed in the 1920's when suburban development began and Northolt began its new life as a 'dormitory' town. Modern family homes were built here from this time and population increased significantly in the 50's and 60's when London spread out to the rural towns surrounding it. Despite the urban crawl, Northolt has retained an air of village life, particularly in the area close to the tube known as Northolt Village which is still home to a village green and also the Saxon church of St. Mary's. Northolt tube station is on London's Central Line which takes you northbound to West Ruislip or south/eastbound right through central London via major stations such as Liverpool Street, Oxford Street and Bank. The Central Line then continues to the east of London finally ending its journey at Epping in Essex. The nearest over ground stations are Northolt Park to the north of the area as well as South Ruislip to the west and Greenford to the east. South Ruislip and Northolt Park are on the Chiltern Railways line which serves High Wycombe, Aylesbury and Birmingham. Going towards central London these trains terminate at Marylebone via Wembley Stadium. Buses in Northolt can take you to all parts of Middlesex and beyond with connections to nearby major areas such as Hounslow, Ealing, Ruislip, Harrow and Heathrow. Northolt is served by excellent roads, namely the A40 which takes drivers to central London in the east and to the M25 in the west. The A40 then turns into the M40 and heads towards Oxford and Birmingham. Northolt Leisure Centre is the brand, spanking new sports facility which boasts a 25 metre, eight lane pool as well as a learner pool with movable floors. It also houses a state of the art gym with features including plasma screen television and integrated entertainment. The leisure centre also has a community hall, a library and a cafe. Northolt is home to many green areas and one of the most popular parks is Islep Manor Park located to the north of the suburb. Islep Manor Park's facilities include a cricket pitch, a bowling green and a basketball court. The park also plays host to a wildlife conservation area known as Islep Manor Meadows. Prior to World War II, Northolt was famous for Pony Racing. In more modern times it became famous as the setting of My Hero, the BBC sitcom with Ardal O'Hanlon. The location of this old Saxon town makes it both a part of London and a gateway to the west of England.
