Why eBooks are better Now EBooks are Better along with Impacts of Social media Imagine this. You are off on a vacation. The list of places that you are visiting is too long and hopping from one destination to the other will eat a lot of your time. Naturally, you are bound to get bored, unless you are travel freak. What do you carry to fend against the boredom? Let me guess; an iPod, a laptop with a sizeable collection of movies and series and loads of books. But there's a problem here. Your iPod is too small to trouble you and your laptop is easily portable, so carrying them around isn't a problem. What about books? To say the least even 3 books would consume a lot of space not allowing anything extra into your backpack or your suitcase. And yes, there's the weight. It's certainly not advisable to carry kilos and kilos of books when you know you may use them seldom. What's your option? An eBook! Impacts of Social media: FlipsidernWhen I first saw my friend scrapping on the Orkut wall, I made a joke of him. When he made friends and wrote testimonials for others I found him to be dumb and when he rated the personality of a person I ridiculed him; all this because I refused to believe that friends and relationships could be made online. Within a month's time I had around 50 friends, seven testimonials, my personality rating was fair if not better; and most importantly I had started liking it, in fact I loved it. Such was the power of social connecting. Generation Next Giving Books a Miss It's not like my childhood was filled with books. Rather books for me meant spending countless hours trying to understand or mug up whatever was printed in the textbook. My exposure to comics and other books were close to absolutely nothing. Seriously, I never thought books could ever do anything meaningful. For me they were boring and a serious problem of man not knowing what to do with the knowledge that he had acquired. And so he deposited them into these tiny little things. But that was not the same with many of my friends who basked themselves in the world of cartoons, comic books, encyclopaedias, and other informational stuff which were more of an escape than anything else.rnThe Age of Fast MediarnTo give you a gist of what an eBook is, it's the digital version of a normal book, but comes with loads of features which are much better than your traditional copy. Here's why you must choose an eBook over a book. 1. The cost factorrneBooks are easy to produce and the cost involved is relatively less compared to the print version. The subscription price too is low. There are many websites that provide free eBooks. Any user can get to read free eBooks by registering or logging through any of the popular social media sites.rn2. Loaded with features.rnIf there is anything that makes the eBook different, it's their features. eBooks can be easily downloaded from a source; their duplication is easy and they can be passed on from one eBook reader to the other with little difficulty. Swapping books becomes simple when it's in a digital form and stored at a location where every user can log on to. Plus features such as highlighting text, dictionary, bookmarking makes eBook better than the conventional books. rn3. Eco-friendlyrnThere is no use of paper and so eBooks could be trees' best friends. There is absolutely no use of ink and this decimates the dependency on the ecology. 4. Easy storagernStorage of an eBook is simple as they hardly occupy any space. A typical eBook would weigh around 2MBs or 10MBs maximum. By having an eBook reader with a decent amount of space, you can store as many eBooks you would like to have. If these points are not enough, it's better to assess things by yourself. Go get yourself an eBook and feel the difference. In the mid-1900s you needed a license to have a radio at home. A newspaper was only available at select stores or public libraries for which you had to walk miles. A telegram which reached only a day after it was delivered was considered fast enough and the word called computer was never heard in India. Compare that with today and you find a completely different world. The opening of the markets in the 1990s gave way to scores of multi-national companies putting shop in many big cities of the country. Media houses were ecstatic with the revenues that advertisements earned them and television channels were also party to the do. The usher of computer also saw a spate of online media houses taking charge of the virtual world. Information was readily available at the click of a button. The entry of social media has taken this rage to an entire new level. Almost anything today can reach the masses in an instant. News is available on the go. All that was needed was a mobile device and an internet connection with fair speed. The world is much faster than before. Rajdeep Sardesai, the Editor-in-Chief of CNN IBN, terms this as the McDonaldization of media. Now-a-days most people just want to browse through and get information specific to their use. Reading through only occurs on weekends or when the piece is of particular interest. This has lead to many television channels changing their way of producing news. Many media houses today show instant news, a segment where latest news is shown in a jiff. Magazines have their sections cut into pieces highlighting only what is needed. Pictorial representations are used instead of text to create more impact. Editorials though are spared the axe. The online shopping industry was also quick to catch up on this trend. Electronics, books, , healthcare products, fitness equipments, eBooks, home and kitchen equipment are all clubbed into a virtual store where only relevant information is needed. Mass-mailers sent out to prospective customers do the trick and dollars are churned out day in and out. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and a host of others have pioneered the task of building a faster world. Websites like Google and Yahoo! with their search engines have given the masses their right to information in their own style. There is no doubt that with time technology has helped man take a giant leap into the future. The invention of computer was a landmark in this quench. The present is looking good and with the greed of excellence and competition outdoing common sense, this is just going to get better by the day. So always read free ebooks . From Orkut to Facebook to LinkedIn and the latest entrant Pinterest, the Internet world is abuzz with networking sites commanding the way the world works and everybody from the old to the new has been engulfed by this new wildfire. The social media today has been an effective tool in marketing and social media skills is looked by the corporate world as an essential when it came to advertising and marketing. It is worthwhile to mention the entry of Ecommerce which has widened social media's scope and has made it a prospective career option for the future. There is certainly no doubt about social media's effectiveness. It has been able to bring people together, make friends, improve relations, solve crime, effectively market a product, and even find a missing loved one. While we continue to relish the benefits of the increasing clout of this media, there are effects which must not be ignored. Like every coin which had two sides, social media too have a face which is dark and dangerous. Some quick research on the net and here is what I found. Social media has been directly or indirectly blamed for a range of psychological disorders which include anxiety, depression, antisocial behaviours, aggressive tendencies, mania amongst others. Sleep deprivation, stomach aches, eye ailments, spinal cord and nervous system disorders are common. Lack of concentration is a constant complaint and lower school attendance is an emerging problem. The pressure of checking one's status on a site is even more important than getting good grades. Outdoor activities have died and the virtual world has become the sole identity. Crimes have increased, relationships strained and communities hurt just because of one status message or a post. The list is enormous and poses serious questions on the use and the regulation of social networking sites. But there are ways to cope with it. I feel God gave us elders for a reason, and here is where we could make use of some of their humble advice. Back during the not-so-old days when cell phones were non-existent, computers a rarity and internet yet to be invented our fathers and forefathers had loads of time for themselves and most importantly their families. So here are some tips. Firstly, believe that there is life beyond the virtual world and that you can do much more. Try taking up some hobbies. Get some featured books by some of the best authors from a local library or an online book club. It will not only give you some good stories but also open up your mind to the literary world. Adventure sports are on the rise; try one. Socializing with friends and relatives would be great and a holiday with your family is even better. By highlighting the negative effects I definitely do not want to demean the positive side of the social media. What's necessary is the awareness and the impact it can have on your life. Responsibility is the golden word here. As you do know prevention is always better than cure. But that was not the same with many of my friends who basked themselves in the world of cartoons, comic books, encyclopaedias, and other informational stuff which were more of an escape than anything else. I remember my school badge had a short but powerful message. "Knowledge is Power" was inscribed in bold. Needless to say most of us found it worthless. Today, after finding a job with a website that promotes books and motivates a user to become a reader, things have changed a bit. Reading has become routine and writing was never so easy. Moreover, the quantum of info that I get feels like adrenalin gushing through my nerves making it see things differently. Today, I'm more open than 10 months ago. That's what books can do to you. Technology has certainly been a boon for us. It has enriched our lives, exposed us to a better world, reduced distances between people and has also created opportunities for a lifetime. But as the world around us changed, we have failed to notice the effects it has had on our children. This in the future could lead to serious consequences if not taken care of now. While we become more and more aware of the usefulness of books, there is a dangerous trend that's emerging, a trend that could destroy lives and create a void in the minds of those whom we call as our future; our children. Our children today have taken to computers. Everything that they learn is just a click away. They are more exposed to the outer world than us. What's wrong you would say? Let's ask ourselves some questions. When was the last time your child went to a book club? Did he ever ask you for the bestseller that had just made it to your nearest store? Do they know about Indian authors who made it big? The answer may mostly be no. This is what is missing. As children become more exposed to computers they become ignorant about books. Reading has become dull and having a book in your bag is not so cool. Though we all know what role books played in shaping our future, it is our duty to carry this message to our children. This is the least we can do for our generation next. So the now the new world is known as ages of fast media with Impacts of Social media: Flipside, Generation Next Giving Books a Miss.
