Obesity is more than being fat. Obesity is having excess amounts of fat in the body that are dangerous and harmful to a person. But not all fat people are necessarily obese. It’s usually based on the Body Mass Index or BMI. BMI compares a person’s weight and height. A BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 and above is obese. Being obese means a person is weighing atleast 20% more than they should. It makes a person more likely to have a variety of harmful conditions and ailments like: •Heart DiseaseStrokeDiabetesSome types of cancersOsteoarthritisGallbladder disease and gallstonesGoutBreathing problemsSleep apnoeaAsthma Weight Loss surgery or bariatric surgery is an option for people who cannot lose weights using traditional means like diet and exercise. A person is a candidate for bariatric surgery in India if: •They’re an obese adult, especially with a weight related condition •They know the benefits as well as the risks of the procedure •They’re ready to adjust how they eat after the surgery •They’re committed to making lifestyle changes after the surgery to keep weight offrnWeight loss surgery in Indiahas turned out quite popular in the short amount of time it’s been here. There are 4 types of weight loss surgeries: 1.Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: In this procedure, a small pouch is created at the top of the stomach, which is the only part that can receive food after the surgery. This greatly limits what a person can comfortably eat or drink at a time. The small intestine is cut a short distance below the main stomach and connected to the pouch. Fewer nutrients and calories are absorbed. 2.Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding: This procedure is called so because it uses laparoscopic surgery (or laparoscopy) for an incision. A band containing an inflatable balloon is placed around the upper part of the stomach and fixed in place. This leads to the creation of a small stomach pouch which has a narrow opening to the rest of the stomach. A port is placed in the skin of the abdomen, with a tube connecting the port to the band. The balloon can be inflated or deflated to adjust the size of the band. This restricts the amount of food your stomach can hold, so you feel full sooner. 3.Sleeve gastrectomy: In this procedure, part of the stomach is separated and removed from the body. The remaining stomach is formed into a tubular structure, creating a smaller stomach which cannot hold as much food. 4.Biliopancretic diversion with duodenal switch: In this procedure too, a part of the stomach is removed. The valve that releases food to the small intestine is left intact, along with the first part of the small intestine known as the duodenum. The middle section of the intestine is then closed off and the last part attached directly to the duodenum, creating the duodenal switch.rnThere are top hospitals in Gurgaon, Delhi, Patna and Darbhanga with experienced and proficient surgeons for weight loss surgery.
