As per many surveys conducted in the country, obesity has reached epic proportions in India in the 21st century. There are many factors that are said to have been contributing to this. As per the National Family Health Survey held in 2007, Punjab and Kerala were found to have the most number of obesity cases with 30.3 and 24.3% percent in men and 37.5 and 34% in women.Obesity is not a lethal disease by itself, but is a serious risk factor that may lead to a range of serious non-communicable diseases. Studies have indicated links to coronary heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and gallstone.

There have been links of certain cancers to obesity. As there is a rise in obesity due to inactivity, there is also a hormonal change and imbalance and the fat cells form a path to tumor growth and levels of inflammation. Both pancreatic and kidney cancer have been linked to excess fat and sedentary lifestyle and their rates have increased to 1.1 and 3 percent respectively. While smoking has been attributed as a cancer causative, in the future, even obesity and lack of physical activity will be attributed with the same.Around 20 per cent of school-going children are overweight. Various types of cancers in women like breast cancer and uterus cancer, menstrual disorder and infertility are caused by obesity.Obesity Surgery India has therefore become essential to the people. Generally, these weight loss surgeries are done by reducing the size of the stomach by removing a portion, by implanting a device or by re-routing the small intestines. These surgeries can be malabsorptive, resistive or mixed procedures. In malabsorptive processes, either a portion of the stomach is cut and then the intestine connected to it or an impermeable sleeve is inserted into the intestine that prevents absorption food.

Resistive Obesity Surgery India is of many types. Vertical banded gastroplasty, a part of the stomach is permanently stapled while in adjustable gastric band, an adjustable silicone band is used to reduce the size of the stomach. Sleeve gastrectomy deals with permanent reduction in stomach size while intragastric balloon deals with inserting a deflated balloon into the stomach and then inflating it to reduce the usable volume. Gastric plication involves suturing the stomach to create a sleeve that gives restriction. Mixed procedures make use of both the resistive and malabsorptive techniques together.
