Today it's common knowledge that your heart and cardiovascular system MUST have Omega 3 fatty acids, like those found in fish oil. Omega 3's help balance lipid levels (like cholesterol and triglycerides), protect against heart disease, even lower blood pressure and protect you against Alzheimer's. Millions have turned to fish oil supplements to get these necessary fatty acids, but not everyone realizes how important it is to choose the right ones. NOT ALL FISH OIL IS CREATED EQUAL! According to my years of research and experience with nutrition and Omega 3's, there are three important factors to consider when choosing a fish oil supplement: 1. The processing. Molecular distillation is by far the best method of fish oil extraction, because it's the best way to ensure all possible oceanic contaminants in the fish are removed. Molecular distillation should be listed on the label of any Omega 3 supplement you buy. 2. The breakdown: The most beneficial types of Omega 3 are DHA and EPA. Of these two, DHA is the most crucial as it is especially important for the brain. (60% of the brain is fats and half of this is DHA!) Surprisingly, most of the supplements on the market today have more EPA tha DHA. The opposite should be the case! The manufacturer should list the breakdown of Omega 3's for you, and DHA should be at the top of the list. 3. The freshness: You wouldn't want to eat fish that isn't fresh, so why would you want fish oil that isn't fresh? Most large manufacturers transport the fish for long distances before they actually do the extraction for the fish oil. As you probably know, however, fish doesn't stay fresh for long. So it stands to reason that the oil extraction should be done as soon as possible after the fish are caught. Look at the total oxidation level (TOTOX) in the supplement documentation. It should be below the international standards (which also should be published inrnthe literature). If not, your fish oil is less than fresh. OMEGA 3'S PROTECT YOUR HEART, YOUR BRAIN, YOUR LIFE Omega 3 fatty acids are absolutely ESSENTIAL for optimum heath, especially as we age. The vast majority of us do NOT get enough of these vital nutrients. If you don't currently take a fish oil supplement, I strongly suggest finding one that works for you and following the above criteria.
