Oncology jobs are vital to any hospital, because the oncology physician examines, makes a diagnosis and treats cancerous tumors. Oncology is the study and examination of cancer. Oncology is defined in three areas of discipline: medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgical oncology.

There are many cancers that are treated by the oncologist and some of them are: breast cancers, malignant melanomas, stomach cancers, bone tumors, and Hodgkin’s disease. Often, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used to alleviate and treat the affects and conditions of cancer. With each patient, the oncologist discusses with their patients what course of action he or she wants to pursue in fighting the cancer and listens to the questions and the concerns of the patient and family.

When a diagnosis of cancer has been made, the oncologist is required to explain to the patient the diagnosis, the stage of cancer, the various treatment options, what the physician recommends as treatment, ensure that the correct kind of care is given and help improve the patient’s life with curative and palliative care along with pain management. In addition, cancer is usually treated by a team of oncologists who work as a team to help guide the patient through the cancer treatment process. This team approach works well because it combines the skills of different cancer disciplines and places them into one group. This team approach works together in the cancer treatment for the patient by utilizing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation to more effectively fight cancer.

Should a new or extremely challenging diagnosis arise with a patient who has been diagnosed with a cancer, the case is reviewed by a tumor board. Tumor boards are experts in medicine that come from many medical areas to discuss and consult on what the best treatment plan should be for the patient.

The training that is required to become an oncologist is difficult, challenging and precise, and so it is necessary for the student desiring to be an oncologist to work hard and stay vigilant to many hours of medical training. In addition, the education requirements are highly comprehensive and time-consuming. As an undergraduate who is pursuing a career in oncology, studies would include such in-depth courses as biochemistry, genetics, general chemistry and ethics.

Once an individual receives a bachelor’s degree, he or she must then attend and ultimately receive, a medical degree and then take part in an internship program that lasts from three to eight years and attend residency programs that help sharpen and “hone in” their chosen specialty. From there, they must pass an examination given by the medical specialty board, that will certify them as a doctor of oncology. Most oncologists earn around $200,000 a year, which also includes other compensation benefits.

Job opportunities in this area are expected to grow due to the increase of our population, the impending retirement of older oncologists and the need for new technology treatments and their application, to the ever-growing need of potential cancer patients.

In addition, oncologists have the opportunity to specialize in certain areas of cancer such as leukemia, gynecological cancer, brain cancer and cancer of the spine. These are areas that are currently in high demand. Oncologists also have several work environments: hospitals, university settings, and research laboratories.
