"A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks!" - Charles Gordy

Smiling is free! However, it is not necessarily easy for everyone to do. You can argue the reasons for a persons difficulties in smiling and feeling good, however, know that there are some genetic factors, environmental factors and learned behaviors in the process. Also, know that it doesn't matter, because now it is your habitual way of being. Once you develop a habit, even if it is mental or physical, it takes practice and conscious awareness to change it. So, even though smiling is free and will quickly change your mood, you are going to need to make sure you do it regularly and practice it.

It is a scientific fact that if you force yourself to smile it will change your mood. It raises endorphin levels in your brain and makes you believe that your mood has improved. Just as your attitude and perception are under your control, so too is your ability to smile and you can smile by simply choosing to do so. Smiling can combat frustration and feelings of sadness. It also reduces stress and strengthens your immune system. Go ahead, try it! Smile and feel what happens.

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around!" - Leo F. Busqualia

Smile:

  • Stop
  • Think
  • Smile
  • Enjoy

Be in the present, do this by stopping and thinking. From time-to-time during your daily routine, stop and think, if you aren't smiling then smile! When you smile let those endorphins improve your mood and enjoy your experience. When I do this, I just take a deep breath and let this positive feeling spread over my body.

Since smiling more often and through out your day may be new to you, then you will need to practice. You will do this by stopping what you are doing, thinking about what you are doing, making yourself smile and then enjoying the feelings associated with your smile. If you are uncomfortable with your smile, then practice it often and do it alone, until you get used to wearing it. You can even practice by looking at yourself in the mirror and smiling. Once you get more comfortable with the process share it, smiling has been called the universal sign of kindness. It is also infectious and you usually get one in response!
