The Internet is swarming with work at home moms, retirees, average Joes, and even teenagers who want to make money online. People are attracted by how quickly and inexpensively they can start an online business. However, most of their ventures fail miserably because people do not understand the importance of choosing the right niche. In the fiercely competitive environment of the World Wide Web, it is very easy to get lost in the shuffle. After all, a new website can be developed in as little as one day. In order to avoid this trap, you should check two things once you have an idea for an online business: the audience of potential customers for that idea and the competitors that are targeting that audience. If your research shows an abundance of people searching for what you have to offer, your next step is to find out who is currently supplying that need. A good online business niche is one that has a reasonable ratio of searchers to suppliers for a product, service, or information. Your potential customers will rarely find you if it means looking through thousands of similar websites that are found during their search. In fact, most people do not look past the fourth page in their Internet search results. Therefore, unless you have a great deal of money for advertising and branding, you will find that attaining success in the midst of extremely high levels of competition is difficult at best. Several companies are now providing keyword analyzers and other tools that make it easier to sniff out a worthwhile niche. These tools, which are based on studies of Internet searches and search engine results, can help aspiring online business owners to find profitable subtopics for broad business ideas. For example, a person who was interested in developing a travel related website may realize that they do not have the necessary resources to compete with Expedia, TripAdvisor, Orbitz, and Travelocity. However, the keyword analyzer may show that there is an audience for the subject of exotic travel. If this sub-category has far fewer product and information suppliers than the travel category, it may be a viable niche. This type of information is invaluable as you are brainstorming. A heavily searched keyword phrase that is not heavily saturated with competition offers amazing profit potential. However, unless you get extremely creative or lucky, there will always be some existing competitors for your business idea. This is not something to be feared because a certain level of competition is necessary to fully supply the needs of Internet users. It only becomes overwhelming when there are too many different outlets for the exact same thing. A business must add value for potential customers in order to have success. After thoroughly researching your niche, ask yourself which of the following applies to your online business:
  1. It fills an unmet need or desire.
  2. It creates a new desire with a unique product, service, or competitive edge.
  3. It significantly improves the way a need or desire is met.
If you are not able to choose one of the above options for your business, now (before any further business development) is the time to reconsider. Moving forward with your original idea may be the right thing to do if your online business is primarily a hobby. If, on the other hand, your goal is to make a sizable income, continue brainstorming until you settle on a niche that sets your online business apart from the masses. Another important factor to consider when choosing your niche is your level of interest. There are no legitimate get rich quick schemes in online business, so it is important to be passionate about what you are doing. If you feel strongly about your niche, you will be more apt to stay focused and committed when the illusion of easy riches has passed you by. Keywords and profitable niches are important, but great success comes when these elements are balanced with the joy of doing something that you love. “Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life.” –Dr. Wayne Dyer
