For more than four decades educators in America have been advising, entreating, and imploring students to get a college education. But it hasn’t done much good, statistically speaking. In fact, things have only gotten worse. The United States used to be a world leader in higher education, now it ranks 12th among developed nations. Only about 39-40 percent of adults in America have a college degree, a rate that hasn’t budged in many years. What are we doing wrong? It all comes down to economics. College tuition costs are rising much faster than the cost of living, i.e., inflation. According to a recent study, tuition for private and state colleges and universities is going up 4 to 6 percent every year, which is 2 to 3 times faster than inflation! This is one of the reasons why more students are enrolling in institutions of higher learning, but fewer are earning their degrees. They simply cannot afford it! The average in-state tuition for a four-year public institution now stands at $17,000 a year, a record high. But that’s nothing compared to the tuition at a private college or university, which now costs over $43,000 per annum! That’s up by more than one-third from just a generation ago. How can the average family afford to pay these massive fees? That’s easy…they can’t, and most of them don’t. Most college students get loans, when and if they graduate, they almost always owe student debts. The average American college graduate owes around $27,000 in student loans! Student debt has become a galvanizing social issue in recent days, especially with the Occupy Wall Street Protesters. These students do not want to start their working careers owning tens of thousands of dollars to financial institutions that charge unreasonably high interest rates. In most cases, of course, there is nothing they can do. The only option is to spend a bit less on education. Believe it or not, this may not involve a serious compromise. All college and university students must take a certain number of required courses. These classes are often basic introductory classes that do not differ much from college to college. A 101 class on nearly any subject is more or less the same at most institutions of higher learning. They are also every bit as expensive as the courses students actually want to take. One simple way to save money is to take online college English classes. In addition to online college English classes, most internet educators offer courses in the Sciences, Humanities, Business, and Mathematics. Students can enroll at anytime; they do not have to wait for a new semester to begin. They are encouraged to work at their own pace and to set their own schedules for online English classes. This is particularly helpful for students who have full or part-time jobs and do not have the time for scheduled online college English classes.
