Online Marketing strategies are many, but if you don’t know how to engage your target market, then you’re in for some trouble. Online Marketing begins with one thing: knowing your audience. If you have a product that you want to sell to yuppies, both genders, within the middle to upper income social status, then consider knowing your audience to the core.

A website design is basic. If we know what we like and don’t like to see on existing websites, this will come easy. But If we want to speak to a group of individuals we need to consider the following about our audience:

1. Know how men and women differ. The internet is surfed by all, yes, but men and women are wired differently. We can trace our steps back and look into evolution and still we will be reminded that men are protectors, and women are relationship-oriented. This means that when men and women surf the web, there’s one gender that is spending more time connecting with the people she loves than she is observing the stock market. Women look closely into product details, whereas men mostly enjoy sports and technology.

2. Stages of development matter. Let’s go back to your general Psychology and recall Erikson’s stages of development. If your target market is young adults, you’re looking into a group of individuals who are seeking to belong, now more than ever. Teenagers on the other hand, are in the middle of an identity crisis. Manipulate your message by speaking to their respective emotional needs and you will definitely bag them.

3. Balance the information. If an article is written solely for men, you will lose the better half of your audience. Kidding aside, tap into your basic writing lessons and generate articles that are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic all at the same time.

Before starting a blog or an online store, begin with understanding your audience. If you aren’t attracting the visitors you need, then consider re-phrasing or re-directing your strategy.
