Knowing what your target market wants can be the best weapon to get them to keep coming back to your website, especially if you are using your site as a sales channel. The only way to get to know you are reaching your target is to collect data from them directly. Online data collection is the quickest and easiest way to get information from your target market. This is done through having them fill up different kinds of forms for different kinds of offers and requests for feedback. Experts say that as a website owner, you must know how to effectively manage your data collection system. The first rule for this is consistency. You don’t need to create unique forms per visitor. If you use one kind of form per requirement, you will be able to assess the information quickly. The results will most likely be more reliable as well since they do not require a vast number of different fields in the database. It becomes possible to collate and create a more comprehensive landscape of information. You must also make it a point to keep all surveys short and quick. They are on your site not to fill up forms for your online data collection but to look at what you can offer. If you take up more than a minute of their time, you are most likely putting their patronage at risk. Include only the necessities. If you are, for instance, collecting demographic information through a registration form, you need not ask what their interests are, just save it for another time. Research shows that questionnaires containing more than 10 fields are more likely to be ignored. This misses the point of online data collection completely. It also significantly helps both you and your participant to keep the forms simple. If you can put drop downs of pre-determined answers, the better it will be for the users. Lastly, to avoid irrelevant responses, it’s best to keep the forms clean. Meaning, you must make certain adjustments so that all answers are accurate so that nothing will be useless or confusing in your online data collection. Make sure you add “Other” and “Not Applicable” in certain fields so you can better screen the information.
