Facial imbalance refers to problems in the appearance of the teeth and jaws, usually caused by misshapen facial bones. The jaws may be underdeveloped or overdeveloped, resulting in functional as well as aesthetic problems. Chewing can become really difficult and there might be overall imbalance in the facial appearance. Orthognathic surgery can effectively correct facial imbalance, providing more attractiveness to the face and improving functionality at the same time.
Conditions that Can be Corrected with Jaw Reconstructive Surgery
This corrective jaw surgery can correct facial anomalies such as:
- Protruding chin
- Weak chin
- Difficulty to close the lips at rest
- Gummy smile
- Flat face or weak facial projection
While orthodontic braces can successfully address small abnormalities of the jaw, plastic surgery is the best alternative for more severe conditions. Orthognathic surgery can be considered if you have problems with biting or chewing, or if your lower teeth touch your palate when you eat.
What the Corrective Jaw Surgery Involves
The surgery can advance the maxilla or upper jaw and the mandible or lower jaw, as well as correct the positioning of the chin. It is provided in three phases. In the first phase the teeth will be properly positioned for surgery, and this is done with orthodontic braces. The period required for this positioning varies with different patients and may extend up to a year or more in the case of patients with serious or complex jaw abnormalities. During the second phase, the plastic surgeon will ensure that the teeth and jaw are properly aligned for a better appearance. Orthognathic surgery can be provided on an outpatient basis; the patient will have to stay away from work for around ten days. The third phase is usually 2 to 3 months after the surgery, when the teeth may be gently manipulated by the orthodontist if found necessary. The braces will be removed after this final stage.
Orthognathic Surgery – Benefit from Dedicated Follow-up Care at a Reputable Facility
Orthognathic surgery should be ideally obtained from an AAAASF accredited plastic surgery center that has been providing successful body sculpting and reconstructive procedures to its patients. Usually, this jaw reconstructive surgery provides excellent results, though there may be minor risks about which your surgeon will inform you prior to the surgery. Feeling of numbness or stiffness on the face, infection, shifting of the bones and anesthesia problems are among the complications that can occur. When the procedure is done by a board certified plastic surgeon experienced in providing orthognathic surgery, chance for such issues are minimal. Moreover, the patient will benefit from a better facial appearance and improved functionality in chewing and speaking.
