Our Early Church’s Roots of Prejudicial History

In order to begin to truly understand the current women priest issue in our Church, we have to travel back into the early centuries of our Church’s History.

Most laws can be very dry or boring yet, with Church law, pertaining to women’s rights, they contained blatant bigotry and prejudice which sadly make them stand out. What were the dynamics which formulated such illogical and twisted thinking to begin with? Who would actually benefit from bringing new Canon law into the issue of Women Priests in the Catholic Church?

Did Roman law play a part in the make-up of our church law?

In the book, The Ordination of Women in the Catholic Church, by John Wijngaards, in referencing Roman law he stated, “It shaped much of the Church law in the Catholic Church”. If it wasn’t already bad enough for this civil Roman law, to unjustly rule women, but then to have our Church fathers, adopt this same perverse, demeaning law, is totally reprehensible in every form of its bias, prejudice and blatant disregard for women in our Church.

What is so ironic about this fact is that, you have Church law, now being formed from this same oppressive Roman law. Under such law, women had nothing and basically were considered as nothing. Yes, there were some rich women who provided the home churches, but there were so many more women during that time having literally nothing.

Jesus, you never denigrated women, called them unclean, or said that they were not made in your image.

Jesus, is this really the way you would want our Church leaders to treat women, down through the centuries of our past Church History, including up to our present-day in time? You certainly never denigrated women, attached the title of unclean to them, or outright told them, that they were not made in your image.

Jesus, you as well, were many times vocal about the religious laws of those in authority, your inclusive action to women as well as your displeasure with law hindering individuals rather than helping them was not in any way, woven in any fashion into a new Canon law, which permanently removed women from ever becoming Priests again in our Church.
