Out of Work Spouse? Travel Together.
The morale in our house these days is a bit to be desired. Since my husband lost his job a few months back we have been consumed with cover letter writing, resume fixing and job searching. It seems as though we’ve completed hundreds of applications and filled out endless paperwork. But as a lay in bed the other night, trying to slow my thoughts – I realized this situation could be presenting an opportunity for my husband and I.
We have always said we would travel at some point in our lives. Maybe when the kids are older or when we’ve got a little extra money. Possibly when life is more stable – but really, that time is now. As I think through the plan… being the planner I am, I think we’ve got it covered.
- The desire for traveling: As I was growing up we would have fallen into the “middle-class” category. So every other summer my parents would pack up the family station wagon and we would venture off to the west or to the east with a map, some cash in a bank envelope and a few word search magazines to keep us busy in the backseat. The adventures have left great memories in my mind and a desire to travel on my heart.
• The cost of traveling: The travel nurse contracts at Nurses PRN usually provide a higher income tha
I would make at home, along with the tax benefits – our housing would be covered and possibly a stipend for additional expenses.
- The time for traveling: Although my husband’s schedule is open due to job loss, he can accompany me on a 13-week contract anywhere in the country without the hassle of receiving approval for a leave or using vacation time.
- The perfect thing for morale: Job searching, as many of us know – can be exhausting. What a great gift to provide to my husband… time away. I think I’ll find out what’s available and then consult with my husband about where he and I can relax. Definitely somewhere warm with some good golfing and restaurants ... we love trying the local favorites!
While I’m at work, he can golf, catch a hockey or basketball game or just lounge by the poolside. Just the break he needs while in the midst of searching for a new job.
The best part, is that this is temporary. We can commit to a 13-week assignment and from there make decisions about careers, life and home. How does that saying go? When life gives you lemons… make lemonade.
