The internet is an ever-changing and growing entity but, unfortunately, many professionals and business owners fail to take this into account and end up wasting their time and money with search engine optimization (SEO) techniques that no longer work. It is important to understand that many of these SEO tactics have either changed or been replaced entirely. Instead of continuously going back to those outdated techniques, try using one of the following alternatives:
Outdated: Keyword stuffing Current: Killer content
It was once thought that stuffing your content full of keywords would get you top results on Google, but this is now actually a black hat SEO technique that is likely to get your website blacklisted. Instead, focus your SEO strategy on writing informative and engaging content that includes only a few keywords.
Outdated: SEO writing for spiders Current: SEO writing for users
It was originally thought that writing in a way that the search engine spiders would understand you was the best way to boost your SEO strategy and get the results you were after. This is no longer the case, as the search engines will actually penalize you for not writing with the end users in mind.
Outdated: Footer links Current: Content links
It was once believed that stuffing your page footers with links to your link exchange partners was a great SEO strategy, but try and do it today and Google will completely disregard them. Instead, you need to make use of content links to boost your SEO strategy – get people to write about you in their blogs and include a link to your site somewhere in the content.
Outdated: Forum signature Current: Links on social media
For some reason, many people are still using forums because they can include a signature that is full of keywords and links to their websites – but, of course, Google cottoned onto this SEO ‘technique’ years ago. Instead, add links to your homepage on your social media profiles to gain more authority.
Outdated: Link building Current: Getting links
When you think about the term ‘link building’ it perhaps evokes images of links being physically built by an SEO expert and inserted into the website. Do this and risk the search engines scrutinizing your SEO strategy. Organic links (known simply as ‘getting links), however, are more important and seem to flow more naturally.
The next time you meet with your SEO expert and they try to proclaim the benefits of one of these outdated techniques, why not bring to their attention the fact that there are more beneficial tactics out there? And, after all, if they were a reputable SEO expert, they would know these techniques were outdated already.
