The summer sun has a tendency to severely limit our time and activities outside. There are only so many times you can go swimming before you get tired of it, and squeezing in a workout while stuck indoors just isn’t the same. But as summer slowly winds down, we are left with the cooler temperatures of autumn that allow us to participate in more outdoor activities without worrying about heat exhaustion, sunburns, or dehydration. Milder temperatures and visual stimulation will help to keep you motivated. Autumn is the perfect time to embark on a new adventure and enjoy the beautiful outdoors before the cold of winter arrives. There is no shortage of outdoor activities that are both fun and will get your heart pumping. Invest in a quality bicycle and explore your city or find some trails to ride. If you cannot afford a new bike, look into local resale shops or browse online ads. Ask friends and family members if they have an old, functioning bicycle that they do not currently use. Most people will happily give or loan an item they know will be put to good use. Try something new that you’ve never done like kayaking or rock climbing. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t require purchasing of equipment, there’s always hiking, jogging, or even walking. A walk is one of the best lifetime sports that will help to keep your heart and body healthy. Whatever adventure you decide on, be sure to check the forecast of the area you are headed to before leaving home. Dress in layers, starting with a snug-fitting base layer that will wick away moisture, to ensure you will be comfortable and prepared for whatever weather may come your way. Make sure you bring healthy snacks that will provide your body with much needed energy. Items like fruits, nuts, and protein bars are great for a boost during those outdoor workouts. And be sure you bring enough water to keep you adequately hydrated. Staying safe when you are in a place you are not familiar with (or even one you know well) is very important. Protect your skin from pesky bugs and the sun’s harmful rays with bug repellant and sunscreen. If possible, bring someone along with you; there is safety in numbers. Become familiar with the area you are visiting and bring a map and compass in case you get lost. If you are going out in the early dawn hours or during the evening dusk, wear light colored clothing and reflectors so that others can easily see you. And always prepare for the worst, even though it is not likely to happen. The advantages of outdoor exercise over being stuck working out indoors are numerous. Studies have shown that a natural environment benefits both mental and physical well-being. Being surrounded by nature and breathing fresh air will help to increase energy and feelings of rejuvenation. It helps to decrease stress and tension, anger, and depression. We all spend far too much of our lives indoors, and that number increases with age. So do your body and mind a favor and get outside. Our bodies are meant to work and play outside, not spend the day stuck inside a cubicle or other work space. Exercising outdoors doesn’t generally feel like a proper workout, especially if you enjoy what you are doing, so you’re more inclined to continue. And those that do not like the gym atmosphere can still get their blood pumping and heart rate going. The possibilities are endless when it comes to outdoor adventure options; there is always something new you can try.
