In the current economic climate many businesses are facing pressures to streamline as much as possible in order to reduce ongoing expenses and therefore increase their profitability. However, within the field of IT support this does not necessarily have to be the case. Operating an 'in-house' IT support department can often be extremely expensive, inefficient and inflexible. At times it may be that all IT systems are operating smoothly and are not in need of upgrade or maintenance. At times such as these the IT support department is a costly luxury that is redundant until a failure occurs within the IT systems. At other times extensive upgrades or modifications may be required, swamping the workload of the IT support department and therefore paralysing any other capabilities. Moreover, employing additional staff on short-term contracts can be costly and inefficient, not to mention complex. However, there is an alternative to the 'in-house' solution which more and more companies are turning to in order to support their IT operations. IT consultancies offer a service which is notably more cost effective and more flexible than operating an internal IT support department. IT consultants are assigned to the company by the consultancy as and when they are required. They are therefore not directly employed by the company but their services are contracted via the consultancy. This simplifies the process of expanding and contracting IT support as and when required and means that additional consultants can be brought in at times of peak demand. Conversely, at times of minimal demand the company is not paying for an IT support department which is sitting idle. The benefits associated with the services of an IT consultancy do not end there however. By using a consultancy the company simply pays the firm for the use of its services. The company does not have to be concerned with paying wages, pensions and benefits to an IT support department, nor does it have to draw up new contracts as demand changes or train new personnel. The whole process of delivering IT support to the company's operations is considerably simplified.
