Oral contraception has become a popular hormonal method for preventing a woman from experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. Before these methods were introduced, women were dependent on contraceptive methods such as condoms. However, condoms did not prove to be an effective method of contraception as women often got pregnant despite using the contraceptive. The oral contraceptive pill, a type of hormonal contraceptive method, has proven to be almost 99% to 100% effective in preventing unplanned pregnancy. As a result, most women prefer to use birth control pills for contraception, although the other hormonal contraceptives, contraceptive patches and rings, are gradually gaining popularity too.

Combined contraceptive pills

An oral pill consists of synthetic female hormones, which act by imitating your natural womb environment. It is categorised into a combined pill and a mini-pill. This categorisation is carried out on the basis of synthetic hormones present in a pill. A mini-pill consists of a single synthetic hormone, progestogen, as a result of which it is often referred to as 'the progestogen-only pill'. A combined pill consists of two synthetic female hormones – oestrogen and progestogen. The presence of two synthetic hormones allows a combined contraceptive pill to work more efficiently, in three different ways.

Ovysmen combined pill

Ovysmen is a combined pill, which consists of synthetic versions of oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progestogen (norethisterone). This pill works in three different ways in order to prevent a woman from becoming pregnant. First, this pill prevents the maturing and release of an egg from your ovaries, thus reducing the chances of an egg being fertilised. Ovysmen further ensures this by thickening the cervical mucus in your womb, which makes the journey of a sperm from your vagina to the womb difficult. Finally, in case an egg is fertilised, it prevents the thickening of the womb lining.

It thus reduces the chances of a fertilised egg implanting and growing in your womb. For the pill to be more effective and for it to provide you with immediate protection against pregnancy, you should start taking the pill on the very first day of your period. The pill is to be continued for a period of 21 days of your 28 day menstrual cycle. You are then to take a break of seven days during which you have a withdrawal bleed, which is similar to your monthly period. Women who use Ovysmen have experienced many benefits apart from its obvious, preventing an unplanned pregnancy.

Benefits and side effects of Ovysmen

The benefits that women experience on using this contraceptive pill include lighter periods, regular periods, decrease in menstrual pains, improvement in PMS symptoms and protection to a certain extent against infections affecting the internal genital organs. Just like any other combined pill, Ovysmen can also cause certain side effects. The commonly experienced side effects of this pill include nausea, breast tende
ess, vomiting, decreased sex drive, headaches, depression, skin reactions and water retention. If you experience symptoms such as stabbing pains, sudden breathlessness, jaundice, itching of the whole body or coughing up blood, you should immediately stop taking the pill and consult your doctor.
