One of the best ways to gauge pain after your procedure is to measure it against the amount of pain you had before the root canal. If it was very painful before you got it taken care of then you will likely need quite a bit of pain medication afterwards. Depending on how much pain you have, it will need to be treated differently.

Whenever someone has an amputation, there are usually ghost pains. This is usually caused by the brain when it tries to use memory patterns to acknowledge that the missing body part is actually gone. When it comes to root canals, there is an amputation of the tooth's nerve. That means that there still may be some ghost pains in the tooth but it usually just goes away on its own. They can also be temporarily treated with the use of a light analgesic like Ibuprophen or Tylenol.

Once the nerve has been completely removed from the tooth, there can also be some buildup of gas pressure that happens between your visits to the doctor. What happens is that after the very first visit to the dentist the person usually goes home with an "empty" tooth. The nerve chamber and the canals in the tooth are filled with dead air and a temporary filling has been used to close up the access hole. Air has a tendency to expand and contract when locked into a tight space and any change in temperature can cause pressure inside of the tooth. This happens when a change in volume of the air presses against the live tissues that are placed beyond the tip of the root.

Any tooth that is in this position can have pain whenever the patient flies on an airplane (the pain is caused by the low cabin pressure), or even when it rains outside (the barometric pressure drops). It can also be felt when the air expands and contracts upon drinking a hot or cold drink. Most people bear through this pain and just ignore it but mild analgesics can also be used until the pressure subsides. If the pain becomes unbearable to the point that it can't even be touched without pain then you may need the dentist to drill the access hole open to relieve the pressure. If the tooth is dry inside of the chamber then the filling can be replaced immediately after.
