But, a recent clinical study has reported that individuals with a previous history of heart attack and taking the aid of common pain reliever medications are at an increased and long term risk of death or experiencing a second heart attack condition. Hence, researchers are warning the patients with a history of heart attack to be caution while taking the most common NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs) such as the OTC drugs like ibuprofen or the prescription drugs like Celebrex, except for Aspirin. Also, medical professionals taking care of the cardiovascular patients are advised to avoid NSAIDs as the risk of death and heart attack exists even after several years. The study did not instituted the threshold limit of the painkillers stating that these individuals if possible should completely avoid these drugs or limit their intake to a minimum amount. Insights into NSAIDs impact on heart patients: The study enrolled around 100,000 heart patients who previously experienced a heart attack and also took the aid of a minimum one NSAID drug after their attack. The results proved that the risk of death by any clinical complication was around 59% more after a year of heart attack and 63% more after a period of 5 years time in the patients. Also, the risk of dying from cardiovascular problem or experiencing a second heart attack was 30% higher after a year and 41% higher after 5 years. The study was found to be in accordance with the results obtained from some other clinical studies in stating that the risk of NSAID medications extends more than a year to around 5 years. The risk of recurrent heart attack or death is found to disappear usually between 5 – 10 year span and there are many clinical reasons that shed light on the negative heart effect of NSAIDs.
