To most people in the world, Oklahoma is known for the amount of oil it produces. But way back in the time, this was where everyone from the Spaniards to other raiders came to find gold. Oklahoma was the home of the Seven Cities of Cibola. These were cities that were rumored to be made of gold and to a large extent they were. One center of a lot of gold prospecting is the south-easte
parts of Ouachita Mountains. From a geological point of view they are continuation of the Appalachian Mountains. Several areas here were known for their gold deposits.

A mirror image of this set of mountains is the Boston Mountains which many say still have deposits on them. The Wichita Mountains to the west of Oklahoma is believed to have gold. People panning for gold in Oklahoma still visit the Wichita Mountains. Of course a great deal of metal detecting has already been done here and the prospects are not too good. Yet every now and then, there are a few who are lucky enough to strike gold. Literally!

Off late a great deal of activity has been seen around Turner falls. It is believed that when glaciers used to cut through the hills that surround these areas, they created the space for a lot of gold deposits. Placer deposits of gold are still up for grabs among the several creeks in Comanche, Greer as well as Jackson, Kiowa and even in the Tillman Counties.

Some of the places you could head to is the Headwaters of Otter Creek. This is part of the Tillman and Jackson Counties. Then there is the North Fork of the Red River which comes in the Greer and Jackson counties. A place to consider, especially if you are looking for relics or artifacts is the Middle Otter Creek.

For relic hunters there are several locations to look into like schools and colleges and their campuses. Look through playgrounds built over ancient spots. The attics and cellars of old Churches or the demolition of a really old home; you are bound to find something. Again something you need to be careful about is the law regarding the ownership of gold. In general, you will need permission from the owner of the land or property you are scouting, to even look there. You should also discuss with the owner of the property of the share of gold they may expect or at least look into the laws of the land regarding this.
